The Trinamool Congress is set to contest 291 seats in the upcoming Bengal Assembly elections, with notable changes in its candidate lineup.
What does the Trinamool Congress (TMC) have in store for the 2026 Bengal Assembly elections? The party will contest 291 of the 294 seats, leaving three for its ally, the Anit Thapa-led Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM) in the Darjeeling hills, as stated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
In a significant shake-up, the TMC has dropped 74 sitting MLAs from its candidate list while retaining 135 in their current constituencies. Additionally, 15 sitting MLAs have been shifted to new constituencies, reflecting a strategic approach to the upcoming elections.
The party has also made strides towards inclusivity, nominating 52 women candidates, which accounts for 18% of its total candidates. Furthermore, 40 Muslim candidates have been fielded, alongside a representation of 78 candidates from Scheduled Castes and 17 from Scheduled Tribes.
Notably, the TMC has chosen to focus on performance rather than celebrity appeal, as it has not fielded any new stars from the Tollywood film industry this time. This decision aligns with the party’s emphasis on effective governance over star power.
The candidate demographics reveal a younger representation, with 45% of candidates below the age of 50. The list includes four candidates below 31 years, 38 candidates aged 31–40, 88 candidates aged 41–50, and 89 candidates aged 51–60.
Among the notable candidates is Pabitra Kar, a recent defector from the BJP, who will contest against Suvendu Adhikari in Nandigram. This move highlights the ongoing political realignments in West Bengal as the TMC prepares for a competitive election.
Thirteen candidates joined the TMC on the same day they received their tickets, indicating a dynamic recruitment strategy. Mamata Banerjee will contest from her traditional seat in Bhabanipur, aiming to secure her position in the assembly.
The TMC has been in power for 15 years, and the upcoming elections will be crucial in determining its future in West Bengal. As the party finalizes its strategies, details remain unconfirmed regarding the full implications of these candidate selections.
