Shubman Gill attends Wimbledon, joins elite Indian captains in Royal Box

Shubman Gill, India’s cricket captain, attended Wimbledon 2026, watching from the Royal Box. This exclusive invitation places him among elite Indian captains.

Shubman Gill, the current India Test and ODI captain, recently attended the Wimbledon 2026 Championships, marking a notable moment in his tour of England. He received an invitation to watch the matches from the prestigious Royal Box, a seating area reserved for distinguished guests at the All England Club. This invitation places Gill among a select group of Indian cricket captains who have been hosted in this exclusive enclosure.

Gill is now only the fourth Indian cricket captain to be welcomed into the Royal Box. He joins the ranks of cricketing icons such as Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma, highlighting the significance of his presence at the event. The Royal Box is considered one of Wimbledon’s highest honours for visiting personalities, recognizing their prominence in sport, entertainment, politics, and public life.

Gill’s Wimbledon Experience and Sporting Engagements

During his visit, Shubman Gill was seen interacting with tennis great Roger Federer. A video capturing their conversation gained considerable attention on social media, delighting fans who witnessed the two sporting figures sharing a moment at the Championships. Gill was also observed enjoying the tennis action alongside Sachin Tendulkar and his wife, Anjali Tendulkar, further adding to the high-profile nature of his appearance at Wimbledon.

The Royal Box on Friday saw a gathering of several prominent sports personalities. Sachin Tendulkar was a key attraction, watching Alexander Zverev reach his first Wimbledon final. Other notable guests included former West Indies captain Brian Lara, Liverpool and Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk, and Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe, alongside Shubman Gill.

Wimbledon acknowledged Tendulkar’s return to Centre Court with a social media post, featuring a photograph and a message welcoming the “Cricket royalty” back to the Royal Box. Commentators during the live television broadcast also referred to Tendulkar as “the greatest batsman of all time” as cameras focused on him during the match.

The official Wimbledon account on X also shared a collage featuring Tendulkar, Kohli, and Gill, celebrating three generations of Indian cricketing figures attending the Championships. The post included images of Tendulkar and Kohli from Wimbledon 2015, alongside a 2026 photograph of Tendulkar seated with Gill. This tribute garnered significant attention from both cricket and tennis enthusiasts.

Tendulkar himself commented on the quality of tennis displayed at Wimbledon, particularly praising Jannik Sinner’s performance as a “masterclass” and acknowledging the efforts of Alexander Zverev and Britain’s Arthur Fery. He witnessed Zverev’s victory over Arthur Fery and Sinner’s dominant win against Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.

Gill’s Busy Schedule in England

Gill’s visit to Wimbledon is part of a busy itinerary during his time in England with the Indian team. Despite their upcoming three-match ODI series against England, he has managed to attend two major sporting events in Britain. Earlier in the week, Gill experienced his first Formula 1 race, attending the British Grand Prix at Silverstone as a VIP guest.

During the Formula 1 event, the Indian skipper had behind-the-scenes access, visiting the paddock and interacting with members of the Formula 1 community. He gained a close look at areas typically reserved for teams, drivers, and special invitees, providing a unique insight into the sport.

On the cricketing front, Gill has demonstrated strong form during the bilateral series. He scored an unbeaten 84 in the opening match and followed it with a commanding 154 in the second game. In the third and final fixture, he adjusted his batting position as India secured a nine-wicket victory. The Indian team is now set to play England in the fifth and final T20I at Southampton on Saturday before focusing on the three-match ODI series.

Tendulkar concluded his reflections on the Wimbledon semifinals by expressing his anticipation for the final, stating, “Days like these are why we love sport. Looking forward to more magic on Centre Court!”
