The Big Bash League (BBL) is set to make history by hosting its first match outside Australia, with Chennai confirmed as the venue for the season opener. The Melbourne Renegades will face the Perth Scorchers in this landmark fixture, scheduled for December 12. This move is part of a broader trend in global sports to introduce national competitions to international markets, aiming to boost fan engagement and viewership.
Cricket Australia has officially announced that the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai will host the opening game of the KFC BBL|16 season. The match is anticipated to be the most-watched game in the league’s history. The Renegades will serve as the designated home team for this encounter, which is slated to begin at 2:40 PM local time.
The decision to bring a BBL match to India has received support from both the Australian and Indian governments, viewing cricket as a means to strengthen the relationship between the two nations. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi jointly unveiled the fixture during a visit to the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Diplomatic and sporting collaboration
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the Melbourne Cricket Ground highlighted India’s aspiration to host the 2036 Olympics and celebrated Chennai’s role in hosting the BBL match. The announcement of Chennai hosting the BBL opener was made by Prime Minister Albanese alongside Prime Minister Modi. Cricket Australia later confirmed the fixture between the Melbourne Renegades and the Perth Scorchers. This event marks a significant step for the BBL, being the first time a match will be played outside Australia.
During his address at the MCG, Prime Minister Modi expressed his delight regarding Chennai hosting the BBL match, noting that staging sporting events in India ensures substantial reach and viewership. He also mentioned India’s bid for the 2036 Olympics, following its commitment to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
Prime Minister Modi reflected on the shared passion for cricket between India and Australia, stating that the sport has fostered friendship between him and Prime Minister Albanese. He recalled their joint visit to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2023, underscoring the sport’s role as a natural link.
Prime Minister Albanese welcomed Prime Minister Modi to the MCG, acknowledging the historic cricket rivalry between the two nations. He highlighted the record attendance during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, which saw a significant number of fans pass through the gates over five days. He also recognized cricket legends Lisa Sthalekar and Steve Waugh for their contributions to the sport.

The roadmap is expected to deepen cooperation in staging major international sporting events. Prime Minister Modi stated that this initiative will expand cooperation beyond cricket, focusing on areas like sports training, science, and technology, thereby strengthening the partnership between the two nations both on and off the field.
Alistair Dobson, CA’s general manager of Big Bash Leagues, emphasized that the opportunity to play in India reinforces the BBL’s global appeal. He noted that the Big Bash has a significant following worldwide, particularly in India, where the TV audience for BBL matches last summer was notably higher than for the Ashes Tests.
The BBL’s venture into the subcontinent aligns with a growing trend among global sports leagues, including America’s NFL and NBA, to play outside their traditional territories. The NFL, for instance, has expanded its global presence, with the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers scheduled to play at the MCG in September.
Chennai was chosen as the ideal location due to its strong passion for cricket and the loyalty of its fans to the Indian Premier League team, the Super Kings, which is recognized as the most supported franchise on social media. The Scorchers‘ history as a successful T20 franchise and their status as defending champions, along with star players Mitch Marsh and Cooper Connolly having strong IPL campaigns, contributed to their selection as the second team.
The match will be broadcast live to Australian viewers on Channel Seven, 7plus, Kayo Sports, and Fox Cricket, starting at 8:10 PM AEDT and 5:10 PM AWST. JioStar will broadcast the match to Indian viewers, with the league aiming to sell out the 38,000-seat stadium for the season opener on December 12.
