Noida news: What sparked the recent on salary hike protests?

Protests by factory workers in Noida over low wages escalated into violence, prompting a strong police response and administrative measures.

The recent protests in Noida, India, have escalated significantly as factory workers expressed their discontent over low wages. The unrest intensified in Phase 2 of Noida after Haryana raised its monthly minimum wage from ₹14,000 to ₹19,000, highlighting the disparity with Uttar Pradesh’s minimum wage of around ₹13,000.

During the protests, which had been ongoing for two days, several vehicles were vandalised, and at least one vehicle was set on fire. Incidents of stone pelting were also reported, causing damage to property in the area. In response to the violence, heavy police forces were deployed to restore order.

District Magistrate Medha Rupam addressed the situation, urging workers to continue their duties peacefully and to avoid believing in rumours or misleading information. She emphasized the importance of maintaining a calm environment while addressing the grievances of the workers.

In an effort to mitigate the unrest, the district administration announced a series of measures aimed at addressing worker grievances. Factories have been instructed to ensure that every worker receives a weekly day off and to pay double for any overtime worked.

Additionally, the administration has committed to disbursing annual bonuses to workers before November 30. To further support the workers, a 24×7 control room has been established, providing immediate assistance and resources.

Moreover, the administration has directed all factories to strictly adhere to labour welfare guidelines. This includes the formation of Internal Complaints Committees in all workplaces to prevent sexual harassment, a significant step towards improving workplace conditions.

As the situation develops, local officials and observers are closely monitoring the protests and the administration’s response. The hope is that these measures will help quell the unrest and lead to a more stable working environment for the factory workers in Noida.
