Nandita Gorlosa has officially joined the Congress party after leaving the BJP, impacting the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
“We are very happy to announce that Nandita Gorlosa has joined the Congress party,” stated a representative from Congress on March 23, 2026, marking a significant political shift in Assam.
Nandita Gorlosa, a sitting MLA from the Haflong (ST) constituency, was previously elected in 2021 on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket. During her tenure, she served as a minister in the Assam cabinet, overseeing portfolios such as mines and minerals and tribal faith and culture.
Gorlosa’s departure from the BJP came after she was denied a ticket for the upcoming assembly elections, with the party choosing Rupali Langthasa as their candidate for the Haflong seat instead. This decision left Gorlosa without a platform to continue her political career.
In a surprising turn of events, Gorlosa joined the Congress party, which had initially named Nirmal Langthasa as its candidate for the Haflong constituency. The Congress later announced that Langthasa agreed to step aside, allowing Gorlosa to become the party’s nominee.
The Assam Assembly elections are scheduled for April 9, 2026, with votes to be counted on May 4, 2026. Gorlosa’s defection occurred just before the nomination deadline, highlighting the urgency and strategic maneuvering typical in political landscapes.
Having built a strong support base among tribal communities in her constituency, Gorlosa’s switch to Congress could significantly influence the electoral dynamics in Haflong. Her experience and connections may provide the Congress with a competitive edge in the upcoming elections.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, remarked, “I had spoken to her and she seemed satisfied,” indicating that Gorlosa’s departure from the BJP was amicable, at least from her perspective.
As the political landscape evolves, the implications of Gorlosa’s shift will be closely monitored by both parties and constituents alike. With the elections approaching, her move could reshape the strategies of both the Congress and the BJP in the region.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full impact of Gorlosa’s transition on the upcoming elections, but her political journey continues to attract attention.
