The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has dismissed false claims about extreme temperature warnings in Kerala. Citizens are urged to rely on official sources.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has recently addressed alarming viral messages circulating on social media that claim temperatures in Kerala will rise between 45°C and 55°C from late April. These messages have caused concern among residents, prompting the KSDMA to clarify the situation.
According to the KSDMA, no such warnings have been issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) or any Kerala authorities regarding temperatures reaching 55°C. The authority emphasized that spreading misinformation about heatwave warnings is a punishable offense under the Disaster Management Act.
The viral messages not only exaggerated temperature predictions but also included various safety precautions, advising citizens to avoid staying outdoors and not to fill fuel tanks completely. However, the KSDMA has stated that these claims, particularly those regarding phone explosions and fuel tanks, are scientifically baseless.
In response to the misinformation, the KSDMA has issued official guidance for the public regarding heat safety measures. They have urged citizens to rely solely on official websites and verified social media pages for accurate weather updates.
The KSDMA reiterated, “Spreading misinformation is a punishable offense under the Disaster Management Act,” and reassured the public that no extreme temperature warnings have been issued. They also clarified that there is no specific department named ‘Civil Defence’ in Kerala; rather, it operates under the fire service as a volunteer force.
As temperatures are expected to rise, the KSDMA has advised the public to take necessary precautions, including avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours. Specifically, they recommend avoiding direct exposure to sunlight between 11 AM and 3 PM.
Officials have indicated that they will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary. Observers are encouraged to stay informed through reliable sources to avoid falling victim to misinformation.
As the summer progresses, the KSDMA’s proactive measures aim to ensure public safety and prevent panic caused by false information. The authority remains committed to keeping the citizens of Kerala informed and safe during the hotter months ahead.
