“I lost my cousin sister yesterday in a car accident. I played well for her,” said Ishan Kishan after India’s remarkable victory in the T20 World Cup final against New Zealand on March 8, 2026, in Ahmedabad.

Kishan’s performance was pivotal, as he scored 54 runs off just 25 balls, contributing significantly to India’s total of 255 runs for 5 wickets. This victory marked India’s third T20 World Cup title and made them the first team to successfully defend the championship.

The final was held at the Narendra Modi Stadium, where the Indian team showcased an impressive all-round performance. Jasprit Bumrah was a standout with the ball, taking 4 wickets for just 15 runs, while Axar Patel supported him with 3 wickets for 27 runs.

Kishan finished the tournament as the fourth-highest run-getter, amassing a total of 317 runs in nine matches, with a striking strike rate of 193.29. His performance included three half-centuries, demonstrating his crucial role in the team’s success.

Reflecting on his mindset during the tournament, Kishan stated, “I have stopped thinking too much. Just do your work and not think about the things which are not under your control.” This approach seemed to pay off, as he led the team with confidence and skill.

Prior to this triumph, Kishan had made a successful return to the national side after leading Jharkhand to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title in the domestic season. His dedication and hard work have clearly positioned him as a key player for India.

As the celebrations continue, fellow teammate Suryakumar Yadav posed a question to Kishan, “Will you win the World Cup?” Kishan’s response, fueled by personal loss and determination, resonated with fans and teammates alike.

The Indian cricket team will now look to build on this success as they prepare for upcoming international fixtures, with Kishan expected to play a central role in the squad moving forward.
