Hardik Pandya faces a complaint for allegedly disrespecting the national flag during T20 World Cup celebrations after India’s victory over New Zealand.
Complaint Filed Against Hardik Pandya
“I believe it is an insult to the national flag,” stated advocate Wajid Khan Bidkar, who has filed a complaint against Indian cricketer Hardik Pandya. The complaint alleges that Pandya disrespected the national flag during celebrations following India’s victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final against New Zealand.
The incident reportedly took place after India secured a 96-run victory at the Narendra Modi Stadium, marking the team’s third T20 World Cup title. Videos of the celebrations went viral on social media, showing Pandya dancing and lying down with the national flag wrapped around him.
Bidkar emphasized the importance of respecting the national flag, citing, “According to Section 2 of the 1971 National Flag Act, we should respect the dignity of the national flag.” He further noted, “The national flag is a symbol of the entire nation, and we can file a complaint here.”
The complaint was officially submitted at the Shivaji Nagar police station in Ahmedabad. While the police confirmed receipt of the application, they did not provide further details regarding any potential action that may be taken against Pandya.
Bidkar’s complaint argues that Pandya’s actions violate the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. This legal framework is designed to protect the dignity of national symbols, including the flag.
India’s recent T20 World Cup victory is significant, as it marks the first time the country has won the title on home soil and the first instance of securing consecutive titles, having previously won in 2007 and 2024.
As the situation develops, Bidkar remarked, “Let’s see what happens next. I have filed the complaint.” The outcome of this complaint remains to be seen, as the police have yet to disclose any further details regarding their investigation.
The complainant insists that the national flag represents the entire country, allowing for the complaint to be filed in Pune, despite the incident occurring in Ahmedabad.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding any official response from Hardik Pandya or his representatives concerning the allegations made against him.
