West Bengal’s electoral roll faces significant changes as 60 lakh voters remain under adjudication, impacting the upcoming elections.
As West Bengal approaches its upcoming elections, the electoral roll has become a focal point of concern. Currently, around 60 lakh voters are marked as ‘under adjudication’, a situation that has significant implications for the electoral process.
On March 18, 2026, the Election Commission of India reported that the total number of eligible voters in West Bengal has decreased to 6.44 crore, down from 7.04 crore. This drop is attributed to the removal of more than 64 lakh names from the electoral rolls, identified as dead, duplicate, shifted, or absent during the verification process, according to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
In an effort to manage this situation, 705 judicial officers are currently engaged in the adjudication process in West Bengal. Their role is critical as they work to resolve the status of the voters under scrutiny.
Additionally, there has been a slight increase in the voter base, with 1.9 lakh new voters added to the list. The first supplementary list of voters is expected to be published by the end of the week, which may further alter the current figures.
In a related development, the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in Odisha has issued a warning regarding a fake website impersonating the official electoral authority. The legitimate website for the Odisha CEO is confirmed to be https://ceoodisha.nic.in.
The presence of a large pool of voters under judicial scrutiny has emerged as a central issue in the election, raising questions about the integrity and accessibility of the electoral process.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding how many voters under adjudication have been accepted or rejected, leaving uncertainty in the electoral landscape.
As the situation develops, the implications for political parties such as the Trinamool Congress, BJP, CPM, and Congress are significant, as they prepare for the electoral battle ahead.
With the electoral roll undergoing substantial changes, stakeholders are closely monitoring the situation to ensure fair representation and participation in the democratic process.
