Ben gvir’s gun licensing policy expands in Jerusalem

Itamar Ben Gvir has authorized gun licenses for residents in 41 Jewish neighborhoods in Jerusalem, potentially affecting around 300,000 individuals.

Expansion of Gun Licensing Policy

In a significant development, Itamar Ben Gvir, Israel’s Minister of National Security, has authorized residents of 41 Jewish neighborhoods in Jerusalem to apply for gun licenses. This policy change could make approximately 300,000 Jewish residents eligible for firearms permits, a notable increase from previous restrictions.

Previously, only residents living near the separation wall were permitted to carry firearms. Since Ben Gvir took office in December 2022, there has been a marked increase in the number of Israeli civilians obtaining gun licenses, with more than 240,000 individuals securing permits during this period.

Context of the Policy

As of November 2025, over 330,000 Israelis held a gun license, reflecting a broader trend towards arming civilians amid rising security concerns. Ben Gvir’s policy has been framed as a necessary measure for self-defense, particularly in light of escalating violence in the region.

In his statements, Ben Gvir emphasized the importance of self-defense, saying, “Especially amid the war and during Ramadan, Jerusalem residents have a basic right to defend themselves and their families.” He further asserted, “My policy is clear: a weapon in the right hands saves lives,” urging residents to obtain licenses.

Concerns and Investigations

However, this expansion of gun licensing has not been without controversy. In 2023, the Israel Police launched an investigation into allegations of illegal gun license approvals linked to Ben Gvir’s office. Additionally, there has been a troubling rise in family-related violence; since October 7, 2023, 53 women have been murdered by family members, marking a 33 percent increase compared to the period before Ben Gvir took office.

The implications of this policy are still unfolding, and while many residents support the initiative, there are significant concerns regarding public safety and the potential for increased violence. Details remain unconfirmed.

As the situation develops, the response from various organizations, including the Freedom of Information Movement and the Michal Sela Forum, is being closely monitored, as they may raise further questions about the impact of such policies on community safety.
