Who is the CM of Tamil Nadu in 2026?

In a surprising turn, Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has emerged as the largest party in the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, defeating MK Stalin’s DMK.

In a stunning shift in Tamil Nadu politics, Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party in the 2026 assembly elections, disrupting the long-standing dominance of the Dravidian parties. This election marked a significant turning point for the region.

Before this development, many observers expected MK Stalin and his party, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), to retain control. The DMK had been in power for five years, and polling suggested they would continue their reign. However, voters had other plans.

The decisive moment came with TVK’s impressive performance on election day. They won 85 seats out of 234 constituencies, while the DMK managed to secure only 41 seats. This stark contrast in numbers highlighted a clear shift in voter sentiment.

This change directly impacted all major parties involved. The DMK’s defeat was particularly notable as MK Stalin lost his own constituency, Kolathur, to TVK candidate V S Babu by around 8,700 votes. Meanwhile, Udhayanidhi Stalin did manage to win his seat in Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni.

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) also faced challenges, winning just 32 seats. This outcome raises questions about their future strategy and relevance in Tamil Nadu politics.

Experts suggest that this election was more than just a power shift; it was a referendum on MK Stalin’s governance over the past five years. The vote share tells an important story: TVK garnered 34.72 percent, translating to approximately 1.18 crore votes, while DMK secured around 24 percent, or about 84 lakh votes.

Udhayanidhi Stalin acknowledged this change by stating, “The people of Tamil Nadu have delivered their verdict, and we humbly accept it.” Such humility reflects an understanding of the shifting political landscape.

Sivakarthikeyan congratulated Vijay on achieving such a remarkable victory in his first election campaign. This sentiment echoes across many circles as political analysts analyze what this means for future governance.

This unexpected outcome not only reshapes the political fabric of Tamil Nadu but also sets a precedent for emerging parties challenging established norms. As TVK rises to prominence, questions linger about how they will govern and what policies they will prioritize moving forward.
