Udhayanidhi Stalin retained his Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni constituency, marking a notable win amid a challenging election for the DMK.
In a surprising twist during the Tamil Nadu elections, Udhayanidhi Stalin managed to retain his Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni Assembly constituency, defeating D. Selvam by a margin of 7140 votes. This victory stands out particularly because it coincides with a significant setback for the DMK, as his father, M.K. Stalin, lost his own seat in the same election.
Udhayanidhi’s win marks his second consecutive success in this constituency, although his lead was notably narrower than in the previous election. In 2021, he won by an impressive margin of 69,355 votes. This time around, however, the political landscape shifted dramatically.
The context of this election is crucial. The DMK’s seat share plummeted from 133 seats in the last assembly to just 6 seats as of 5 PM on election day. Meanwhile, the newly formed TVK party not only secured 10 seats but was also leading in an impressive 99 seats.
Udhayanidhi is widely seen as the political heir of both Karunanidhi and M.K. Stalin. His family has deep roots in Tamil Nadu politics; his grandfather, Karunanidhi, previously won from Chepauk three times before its unification with Triplicane in 2011. This lineage adds pressure and expectation on Udhayanidhi to navigate these turbulent political waters effectively.
Observers note that Udhayanidhi is expected to assume a leadership role as the opposition if the DMK becomes the main opposition party following these elections. His ability to maintain a foothold in politics while facing such challenges speaks volumes about his resilience and strategic positioning.
As the dust settles on this election cycle, many are left pondering what this means for the future of Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. With Udhayanidhi’s narrow victory amidst widespread losses for his party, will he be able to consolidate power or will he face ongoing challenges from emerging parties like TVK? Only time will reveal how these dynamics will unfold.
