India clinched the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe with a 90-run win in the second match, establishing an unassailable 2-0 lead. The victory marked the first series win for new T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, following previous series losses under his leadership against Ireland (0-2) and England (0-4).
Half-centuries from Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma were instrumental in setting a strong total for India. Their batting performance, combined with a disciplined bowling effort, allowed India to outplay the hosts after posting 219/5.
India’s Batting Dominance
After being asked to bat first, India recovered from an early setback at 29/2. Abhishek Sharma was caught at point off Blessing Muzarabani, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who scored 20 off nine balls, mistimed a bouncer from Richard Ngarava to Muzarabani at mid-on.
Kishan then played a crucial role in stabilizing the innings. He first contributed 66 runs for the third wicket alongside captain Shreyas Iyer, who scored 25. Following this, Kishan and Tilak Varma forged a 94-run partnership, overcoming the initial wobble.
Kishan scored 81 off 44 balls, reaching his fifty in 31 deliveries before accelerating to add another 31 runs in just 13 balls. His scoring was particularly effective on the leg side, where he frequently found the boundary. He hit Brian Bennett for two fours through the mid-wicket region and later struck pacer Brad Evans for two fours and a six in the same area.
Tilak Varma remained unbeaten on 60 off 29 balls, reaching his fifty in just 23 deliveries. He attacked Zimbabwe‘s leading pacer Blessing Muzarabani with three successive boundaries, including a late dab behind point using the bowler’s pace. Tilak also hit Evans for a six over mid-wicket. This aggressive batting helped India amass 61 runs in the final five overs.
Zimbabwe’s Chase and Indian Bowling
Chasing a target of 220, Zimbabwe‘s task became challenging after losing five wickets within the first nine overs. They were eventually bowled out for 129. Brian Bennett provided an aggressive start for Zimbabwe, scoring 32 off 19 balls, which included three fours and three sixes.
Bennett took on debutant Yash Thakur, hitting him for a six and a four consecutively. However, Thakur responded quickly, as Bennett‘s attempted ramp shot was caught by wicketkeeper Kishan. Thakur finished with figures of 2/30, contributing to the consistent fall of wickets for Zimbabwe.
While Ryan Burl and Tadi Marumani made scores in the 20s, Zimbabwe could not establish a significant partnership to challenge India. The Indian bowlers maintained pressure throughout the innings. Part-time spinners Tilak Varma and Abhishek Sharma also picked up wickets, with Abhishek returning figures of 3/17 as India comfortably wrapped up the innings.
During the match, India faced an injury concern when pacer Prince Yadav left the field holding his hamstring after bowling 1.2 overs. He concluded his spell with figures of 2/10. The match took place at Harare Sports Club on Saturday.
The series victory provides a significant boost for Shreyas Iyer in his role as T20I captain. The final score saw India at 219/5 and Zimbabwe all out for 129.
