Jadumani Singh secures quarter-final spot

India’s Jadumani Singh Mandengbam delivered a strong performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, securing a unanimous decision victory over Pakistan’s Sumama Rehman. This win in the men’s 55kg boxing Round of 16 ensures his progression to the quarter-finals, maintaining India’s medal prospects in the category. The boxer from Manipur achieved a 5-0 victory on Sunday.

Jadumani’s win against Rehman follows an earlier victory in the Round of 32 against Scotland’s Aaron Cullen. He entered the pre-quarter-final with confidence after his performance against Cullen, while Rehman had received a bye in the preliminary round. Jadumani, a silver medalist in the 50kg division at last year’s World Boxing Cup Finals in Noida, has since moved to the 55kg category this season.

The opening round of the bout was closely contested, with both fighters exchanging punches. Rehman utilized his height and reach, while Jadumani employed quick footwork, sharp movement, and fast combinations. The judges narrowly favored Jadumani after the first round. However, the intensity increased in the second round, where Jadumani gained control and scored a knockdown against Rehman, shifting the momentum. He maintained this advantage through the remainder of the fight, securing a unanimous verdict from all five judges after three rounds.

Jadumani is now set to face England’s Ellis Trowbridge in the quarter-finals on Tuesday. A victory in this match would guarantee him a place in the medal rounds, as Commonwealth Games boxing rules award bronze medals to both losing semi-finalists.

Preeti Panwar advances, Lovlina Borgohain secures medal

In other boxing developments, Preeti Panwar has also advanced to the quarter-finals in the women’s 54kg category. The 22-year-old boxer from Bhiwani secured a win via Referee Stop Contest (RSC) decision in the second round against Deborah Mtenje of Malawi. Mtenje received two standing counts, one in each round, leading the referee to stop the bout with 47 seconds remaining in the second round. Preeti had received the unanimous nod from all five judges in the first round.

Preeti’s win places her one victory away from securing her first Commonwealth Games medal. She is scheduled to compete against Northern Ireland’s Nicole Clyde in the quarter-finals on Tuesday. Clyde had previously defeated Ghana’s Nancy Bamfo by unanimous decision in her pre-quarter-final bout. The two boxers have a history, having trained together as sparring partners in Belfast before the Games.

Preeti stated that her first bout allowed her to assess her performance in the ring, checking the environment in the first round before becoming more aggressive in the second. She expressed optimism about her draw and her chances for a medal.

Meanwhile, Lovlina Borgohain has already secured India’s first confirmed boxing medal at the Games. Competing in the women’s 75kg division, Lovlina received a direct bye into the semi-finals, which automatically guarantees her at least a bronze medal under Commonwealth Games regulations. She is scheduled to compete against Tuvalu’s Tarona Khanum Badi Pasoni Taafaki in the semi-finals on July 31, with a spot in the gold medal bout at stake.

Siwach continues campaign

Further progress for India’s boxing contingent includes Sachin Siwach, who advanced from the Round of 32 in the men’s 60kg division. Siwach, a 26-year-old from Bhiwani, Haryana, defeated Canada’s Keoma Al-Ahmadieh with a 4-1 split decision in a closely contested match. He is set to face England’s William Hewitt on Monday for a place in the quarter-finals. India has sent a 14-member boxing team to Glasgow, comprising seven male and seven female boxers, with expectations for a strong medal haul.

With Jadumani in the quarter-finals, Lovlina guaranteed a medal, and Siwach continuing his campaign, India’s boxing team remains competitive across several weight categories as the competition progresses in Glasgow.
