Chelsea are currently in discussions to sign Brighton striker Danny Welbeck. The 35-year-old forward has expressed interest in a move to Stamford Bridge, and there is optimism from Chelsea’s side that a deal can be finalised. Welbeck has one year remaining on his contract at the Amex Stadium.
This potential acquisition signals a strategic shift for Chelsea, who are seeking more experienced players. Influential owner Behdad Eghbali indicated in April that the club’s model of signing young players needed an adjustment, making Welbeck, with his experience, a potentially suitable fit. Brighton has not commented on the ongoing talks.
Last season, Welbeck achieved a career-high of 13 league goals in 37 games for Brighton. Since joining Brighton from Watford in 2020, he has scored 51 goals in 201 matches. He signed a 12-month contract extension in March, which runs until the end of the 2026-27 season.
The interest in Welbeck aligns with Chelsea’s recent pursuit of other experienced players. Earlier in the summer, the club attempted to sign 33-year-old midfielder Granit Xhaka from Sunderland, though the Black Cats declined to sell the Switzerland captain. Chelsea has also shown interest in free agent John Stones, who is 32. The club is also expected to complete a £52m move for Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix, 26, to further bolster their Premier League-ready experience.
The potential arrival of Welbeck could impact the futures of several current Chelsea forwards. Joao Pedro is considered the club’s first-choice option. Other forwards on Chelsea’s books include Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu, and Nicolas Jackson. Guiu is reportedly available for either a permanent transfer or a loan, with Chelsea valuing him at approximately £25m.
Jackson, who recently returned from a loan spell at Bayern Munich, was expected to remain at Stamford Bridge but is reportedly open to leaving due to interest from Aston Villa. Delap, who moved from Ipswich for £30m just a year ago, had hoped to establish himself under new manager Xabi Alonso but is increasingly expected to depart. Uncertainty also surrounds the future of Dutch striker Emegha, despite his recent move to Chelsea from Strasbourg, a club within the same ownership group.
Chelsea has already made significant signings this summer, including club-record £117m attacker Morgan Rogers and full-back Marco Palestra. The club is also nearing a move for centre-back Maxence Lacroix. While the arrival of Rogers, 23, aligns with the club’s preference for younger players, he also brings significant Premier League experience.
The move for Welbeck is seen as a clear indication of manager Xabi Alonso’s desire for experienced players and strong personalities to address the team’s shortcomings, which contributed to their 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season. Welbeck’s leadership qualities have been praised, with Fabian Hurzeler highlighting his value as both a goal scorer and a leader on and off the pitch after Brighton’s 2-1 win over Liverpool in March.
Welbeck’s playing style is characterised by his effectiveness in the penalty box. Among players who attempted 30 or more shots in the Premier League last season, only a few had a better shot-to-goal conversion rate than his 23 per cent, and only a few achieved a higher share of shots on target than his 50 per cent. His off-the-ball runs and ability to create space for teammates like Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer are also noted strengths. Welbeck has thrived in quick pass-and-move sequences at Brighton, particularly when playing ahead of Joao Pedro, with whom he could reunite at Chelsea.
Chelsea’s pursuit of Brighton players is not new, with several players moving from the Amex Stadium to Stamford Bridge in recent seasons, including Joao Pedro, Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, and Robert Sanchez. Additionally, several Brighton staff members, such as sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Sam Jewell, have also moved to Chelsea over the past four years. Welbeck began his career at Manchester United, scoring 29 times in 142 appearances before moving to Arsenal in 2014.
At Arsenal, he registered 32 goals in 126 games across six seasons, followed by a year at Watford before his transfer to Brighton. His potential arrival at Chelsea would mean the club would no longer have to contend with his impressive record of seven goals and two assists in 19 Premier League games against them.
The club’s key summer business so far includes the arrivals of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117m, Geovany Quenda from Sporting for £43.5m, Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £43m, Denner from Corinthians for £8.7m, and Dastan Satpaev from Kairat Almaty for £2.1m. Emmanuel Emegha also joined from Strasbourg for an undisclosed fee. Departures include Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid for £51.8m, Andrey Santos to Manchester United for £50m, Tyrique George to Everton for £24m, and Jimmy-Jay Morgan to West Brom for £4m.
