The Lok Sabha is scheduled to consider a no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla, initiated by the Opposition. Political tensions are expected to rise during the session.
Political Tensions Surround Om Birla
The Lok Sabha is scheduled to take up a resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla today, marking a significant moment in Indian politics. The motion has been initiated by three Congress members: Mohamed Jawed, K Suresh, and Mallu Ravi, who have accused Birla of acting in a partisan manner.
In a show of opposition, 118 MPs have signed a no-confidence notice against Birla. This move reflects the growing discontent among opposition parties regarding his conduct in the Lok Sabha.
Birla has recused himself from presiding over the Lok Sabha due to the no-confidence motion, and he is expected to return to the chair only after the matter is resolved. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has openly supported Birla, asserting that he adheres to the values of the Constitution and parliamentary democracy.
Despite the motion, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) holds a comfortable majority in Parliament, making it unlikely that the motion against Birla will pass. The second phase of the Budget Session will continue until the 2nd of next month, during which political clashes are anticipated.
During this session, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar is scheduled to address the Lok Sabha regarding the situation in West Asia. Furthermore, opposition parties plan to raise concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in West Bengal.
The first part of the Budget Session began on January 28 and continued until February 13, focusing on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address and the Union Budget for 2026-27. As political tensions rise, the outcome of the no-confidence motion remains uncertain.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding how the situation will unfold in the Lok Sabha as the session progresses.
