Chelsea has announced the signing of England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The 23-year-old forward has agreed to a contract at Stamford Bridge that extends until 2033 and is set to join Xabi Alonso’s squad for the upcoming 2026/27 season.

The transfer involved key figures such as owners and sporting directors Paul Winstanley, Laurence Stewart, Joe Shields, and Sam Jewell. Club captain Reece James spoke with Rogers at the England camp, and close friend Cole Palmer also reached out via text message. This collective effort underscored Chelsea’s serious intent to secure Rogers’ signature, with the speed of their work being a positive factor for the player.

Chelsea has reportedly agreed to a record fee for a British player, amounting to £117 million, with Aston Villa. This club-record deal generated considerable attention when the news broke on Saturday, just hours before Rogers started for England in their 6-4 victory over France in the World Cup third-place play-off.

Rogers’ Impact and Versatility

Rogers arrives at Chelsea after establishing himself as a prominent young attacking talent in the Premier League. During his tenure at Aston Villa, his contributions included goals and assists that led to 40 goals in 85 Premier League appearances. He played a role in guiding the Midlands club to a top-four finish and subsequently lifting the UEFA Europa League trophy last season.

Since his senior England debut in November 2024, Rogers has become a regular for the Three Lions, earning 22 caps and representing his country at this summer’s FIFA World Cup.

Chelsea and Alonso value Rogers’ ability to play across various attacking and midfield positions, including on the left, right, as a ‘No 10’, ‘false nine’, and deeper in midfield. His physical attributes, size, and attitude are also highly regarded. Joe Shields, who knew Rogers from their time together at Manchester City’s academy, where Shields was head of recruitment and talent management from 2018, was also involved in the Chelsea signing. Rogers joined City’s academy from West Bromwich Albion in 2019, and they worked together until Shields moved to Southampton in 2022. Everyone at Chelsea was reportedly in agreement regarding the signing of Rogers.

Chelsea maintained a strong relationship with Villa, which they believed put them in a favourable position. The club informed Rogers’ representatives earlier in the summer that they would not pursue a move while England was still competing in the World Cup, aiming to avoid any distractions. Villa also preferred not to sell before the tournament, believing Rogers’ involvement would enhance his market value. Rogers will officially join Chelsea ahead of the 2026/27 season.
