Ireland’s George Dockrell looks ahead to the challenging T20 series against reigning champions India. Discover how Lorcan Tucker’s new captaincy will shape the
Ireland prepares for India series
The Ireland men’s team is set to host reigning World T20 champion India for a two-match series, beginning on Friday. This series marks a new phase for Ireland in T20 cricket, with Lorcan Tucker having recently taken over the captaincy from Paul Stirling. The team is currently working on establishing a new identity under Tucker’s leadership.
All-rounder George Dockrell expressed his view that this challenging assignment will provide Ireland with a clear understanding of its current standing in the sport. Dockrell noted that while the team might not play as much cricket as desired, they aim to make the most of every opportunity, whether it involves testing themselves against top teams or implementing new strategies.
Dockrell, an experienced player within the squad, indicated his excitement for this new chapter in Ireland’s T20 journey. He highlighted the special nature of playing India at home in Ireland and the presence of new faces contributing to the team’s evolving identity. He also voiced support for the new skipper, Tucker, describing him as clear, calm, and a thoughtful leader since assuming the role.
India faces selection dilemmas
Meanwhile, India’s team management faces a significant decision regarding the inclusion of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the starting eleven for the series against Ireland. Sooryavanshi, a 15-year-old, has garnered considerable attention following his performance in the IPL and a notable 29-ball 94 for India A against Sri Lanka A.
The challenge for India’s management, led by head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shreyas Iyer, lies in accommodating Sooryavanshi without disrupting the established top three batsmen: Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan. These three players were instrumental in India’s ICC T20 World Cup final victory against New Zealand in March, which was India’s most recent T20 assignment.
If Sooryavanshi, an opener, is included, it would necessitate a change in the batting order, potentially requiring either Samson or Abhishek to bat lower or be omitted. Pushing Samson to the middle-order, where he has previously played at No. 4 and No. 5, would mean he occupies a slot that would otherwise be taken by captain Iyer and vice-captain Tilak Varma. This would leave No. 6 as the only available position, traditionally reserved for an all-rounder.
India has several all-round options, including Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, and Suryansh Shedge. Placing Samson at No. 6 could lead to India fielding only five bowlers, a department already considered to be without key players such as Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammmad Siraj, and Varun Chakravarthy.
Samson has strong statistics as an opener, with 926 runs from 28 innings, including three hundreds and four fifties, and a strike rate of 181.93. His strike rates at Nos. 3, 4, and 5 are lower, at 121, 129, and 127 respectively. Abhishek Sharma, currently the No. 1 T20I batter, has also been effective as an opener, scoring 1414 runs from 43 innings with two hundreds and 10 fifties, at a strike rate of 192.38.
All three players—Abhishek (563), Kishan (602), and Samson (477)—had successful outings in IPL 2026. Kishan also recently scored 125 against Afghanistan in a one-day international. The presence of Sooryavanshi is expected to add pressure on Samson and Abhishek to maintain their performance to avoid being in a precarious position for team selection.
Squads and match details
India’s bowling lineup for this series is a second-string unit, but it provides an opportunity for players to prove their capabilities, especially with a subsequent series against England on the horizon. Harshit Rana’s return from injury offers more options in the pace department, where he will compete with Prasidh Krishna and Prince Yadav. Prasidh Krishna recently achieved a career-best fifer in an ODI against Afghanistan.
Ireland will be without several key players due to injuries, including Josh Little, Mark Adair, Paul Stirling, and Curtis Campher. Despite these absences, Ireland’s squad includes capable T20 players such as George Dockrell, Gareth Delany, Harry Tector, and Jai Moondra, who will be playing in home conditions.
The India squad includes Shreyas Iyer (captain), Tilak Varma (vice-captain), Ravi Bishnoi, Abhishek Sharma, Suryansh Shedge, Prasidh Krishna, Sanju Samson, Axar Patel, Harshit Rana, Ishan Kishan, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Shivam Dube, Prince Yadav, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The Ireland squad comprises Lorcan Tucker (captain), Ross Adair, Ben Calitz, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Stephen Doheny, Matthew Humphreys, Gavin Hoey, Matthew Hollard, Liam McCarthy, Jai Moondra, Harry Tector, Tim Tector, and Reuben Wilson. The match is scheduled to start at 6pm IST on Friday.
