Vancouver: Canada loses home advantage after Switzerland wins Group B

Switzerland beat Canada 2-1 in Vancouver, topping Group B and forcing co-hosts Canada to travel to Los Angeles for their next World Cup match. Get the details!

Switzerland secures top spot in Group B

Switzerland defeated Canada 2-1 in Vancouver, securing the top position in Group B of the World Cup. This result means Switzerland will remain in Vancouver for their last-32 tie, while co-hosts Canada will travel to Los Angeles for their next match against South Africa. The Swiss side finished the group stage with seven points, three points ahead of Canada.

The match saw a decisive second-half performance from Switzerland. Ruben Vargas opened the scoring 40 seconds into the second half, followed by Johan Manzambi, who doubled the lead approximately 10 minutes later. These goals came in a 12-minute burst at the start of the second half, putting Murat Yakin‘s team in a strong position.

Canada‘s coach, Jesse Marsch, had hoped a draw would secure the top spot for his team, allowing them to stay in Vancouver. However, the defeat has altered their knockout stage itinerary.

Canada’s second-half rally and tactical decisions

Despite being 2-0 down, Canada found a lifeline through substitute Promise David. He scored his goal 73 seconds after coming on, fulfilling a previous promise to score a World Cup goal in Vancouver. His effort, a volley from Nathan Saliba‘s cross, brought the score to 2-1 and reignited hopes for the home side.

Marsch made tactical decisions that were scrutinised. Captain Alphonso Davies, who had been guaranteed to play by Marsch on Tuesday, was ultimately unused. Marsch stated that Davies was not ready and was used as a “decoy” to make Switzerland consider his potential involvement. Davies is expected to be ready for the match in Los Angeles.

The absence of Ismaël Koné, who was seen on crutches after sustaining a leg injury, also impacted Canada‘s midfield. Marsch considered Nathan Saliba and Mathieu Choinière as replacements, eventually deploying both. Vice-captain Stephen Eustáquio was not fit enough to start, further complicating Canada‘s midfield options against an experienced Swiss side featuring Granit Xhaka.

Impact on knockout stage and team reactions

The loss means Canada will face South Africa in Los Angeles on a four-day turnaround. Switzerland, as Group B winners, will play a third-place team from either Group E, F, G, I, or J, remaining in Vancouver for their next fixture on July 2.

Murat Yakin, Switzerland‘s coach, expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, noting that they delivered as a team and deserved their position. He highlighted that his side focused on reacting to events on the pitch and were not fooled by Canada‘s tactics regarding Davies.

Marsch acknowledged the disappointment of not staying in Vancouver but emphasised the continued opportunity for Canada to perform in the tournament. He praised his team’s heart and effort, despite acknowledging that they were tentative at the start of the game. The atmosphere in BC Place was described as impressive, with fans creating an energetic environment for the Wednesday matinee match.

The first half of the match was largely uneventful, with only three attempts on goal recorded by both teams combined. A clash between Granit Xhaka and Cyle Larin resulted in two yellow cards. Switzerland‘s breakthrough came quickly after the restart, with Vargas scoring 40 seconds into the second half.
