Brazil secured their spot in the knockout stages of the World Cup after a 3-0 victory over Scotland in their final Group C match. The match saw Vinicius Junior score twice, and marked the return of Neymar to the Brazil squad after an absence.

The win took place on Wednesday at a packed Miami Stadium, where 64,478 fans watched Carlo Ancelotti’s team finish at the top of their group with seven points. Morocco also advanced, securing second place with a 4-2 win against Haiti.

Vinicius Junior’s Impactful Performance

Vinicius Junior opened the scoring for Brazil in the seventh minute. The goal came after a defensive mix-up by Scotland, with Scott McKenna failing to clear the ball. This allowed Rayan to intercept and pass to an unmarked Vinicius. The Real Madrid forward then took a touch to move the ball past goalkeeper Angus Gunn and tap it into an open net.

The 25-year-old forward has been in strong form throughout the tournament, scoring in every game so far. His two goals against Scotland brought his total to four goals in the competition, placing him alongside players like Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland in the scoring charts, and just one goal behind Lionel Messi.

Before the first hydration break, Vinicius appeared to have scored a second goal after taking the ball from Jack Hendry. However, the goal was overturned by the referee following a VAR check, which determined a foul by the Brazilian player.

Brazil’s second goal, a crucial one just before half-time, was again scored by Vinicius. After winning the ball high up the pitch, Bruno Guimaraes delivered a cross to the far post, where Vinicius headed it home for his second of the match. This goal was described as a significant blow to Scotland’s hopes.

In the second half, Brazil continued to press for more goals. Their third came from a move through the midfield, with Guimaraes providing his second assist of the night. He maneuvered into the box before setting up Matheus Cunha, who scored his third goal of the tournament.

Neymar’s Return and Scotland’s Struggles

A notable moment of the match was the return of Neymar to the field. Ancelotti brought the 34-year-old on for his first appearance in a Brazil shirt since October 2023, drawing a significant cheer from the crowd. Although Neymar did not score, his presence marked an important moment for the team.

Scotland’s manager, Stephen Clark, had anticipated an aggressive start from Brazil. Despite this, Scotland struggled to create significant attacking opportunities throughout the match. They failed to capitalize on set-pieces, which were their primary chances to score, and ended the first half without any shots on target.

In the second half, Scotland showed some resilience, with Scott McTominay making a header that was saved by Alisson. Lawrence Shankland’s attempt found the roof of the net, but Alisson remained a strong presence in goal, denying Scotland a late chance and helping Brazil maintain a clean sheet.

The defeat leaves Scotland’s World Cup hopes dependent on other results. With three points and a goal difference of minus three, their fate is now out of their hands, as they await to see if they can secure a spot as one of the leading eight third-placed teams in the tournament.

Brazil’s comfortable win, combined with Morocco’s victory, sets them on a path to Houston for their next match, where they are scheduled to face either the Netherlands, Japan, or Sweden next Monday.
