The Indian cricket team is currently grappling with a significant selection challenge regarding the integration of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a 15-year-old batting prodigy, into the T20 squad. This dilemma has been intensified following recent losses to Ireland, prompting a re-evaluation of the team’s selection strategies. The debate now extends to the upcoming five-match T20 series against England, which is scheduled to commence on July 1.
Despite his strong form, Sooryavanshi was benched throughout the series against Ireland, a decision that has divided opinion among former players. While some advocate for his immediate inclusion, others support the team management’s approach of maintaining stability.
Calls for Sooryavanshi’s inclusion
Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has strongly advocated for Sooryavanshi’s inclusion, suggesting he should have played in both games against Ireland. Gavaskar believes that the series against Ireland presented an ideal opportunity to blood young talent. He has asserted that Sooryavanshi must play from the first game in England on July 1, even suggesting that out-of-form batters should be benched to accommodate him.
Gavaskar’s perspective is that form, rather than hierarchy, should dictate selection. He proposed that Sooryavanshi could play at number three if the opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma is to be retained. This would involve adjusting the batting order, potentially moving players like Ishan Kishan down a slot.
Former India batter Mohammed Kaif echoed similar sentiments on his YouTube channel, criticising what he perceived as inconsistencies in the selection logic. He highlighted Sooryavanshi’s impressive performance, including winning the Orange Cap and the MVP award in IPL 2026, as well as scoring 94 off 29 balls in a final in Dambulla during a stint with India A.
Former Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary also questioned the coaching staff’s adherence to pre-conceived notions, arguing that Sooryavanshi’s current form warranted his inclusion. He pointed out that the team went with players who performed well in the T20 World Cup, which occurred before the IPL, and that the obsession with part-timers had not met expectations.

Balancing new talent with team stability
The team management, led by coach Gautam Gambhir, has maintained a stance of following a process, which saw the opening duo of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma retain their places after their performances in the T20 World Cup. This approach has been described as seeking comfort in the familiar and backing a T20 World Cup-winning core.
However, the decision to omit Suryakumar Yadav, the World Cup-winning captain, has led to charges of inconsistency against the selection committee and team management. The hierarchy, including captain Shreyas Iyer, has been reported to prefer continuity.
Former India spinner R Ashwin offered a different viewpoint, suggesting that there is no immediate place for Sooryavanshi in the current XI. He argued that players like Samson and Abhishek Sharma do not feature in Test or ODI cricket and therefore need the T20 format to maintain their relevance within the team structure. Ashwin suggested that if Sooryavanshi were to play, it should be on a tour like Zimbabwe, where incumbent openers might not be present, or in the event of an injury or loss of form from existing players.
The challenge for the team management is to balance integrating new talent like Sooryavanshi with maintaining team stability and performance, especially in the upcoming England series. The wickets in England are anticipated to be slightly flatter, based on their behaviour in previous summers.
One potential solution, if the Samson-Abhishek pair is to be retained alongside Sooryavanshi, would involve sacrificing another batter such as Ishan Kishan or Tilak Varma to ensure a balance of five specialist bowlers. Alternatively, dropping Samson has been suggested as a logical, albeit unpopular, move, given his recent scores of 5 and a first-ball duck in two games against Ireland, where his technique was tested in bowler-friendly conditions. The five-match T20 series in England is set to begin on July 1.
