Guwahati has recently marked significant developments with the opening of a new airport terminal and the commencement of cultural celebrations by the Guwahati Artists Guild.
New Airport Terminal Commences Operations
The new integrated terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati commenced commercial operations on March 11, 2026. This development is expected to significantly enhance passenger handling capacity and improve operational efficiency, marking a pivotal moment for the region.
Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, emphasized the importance of the terminal, stating, “The terminal had been constructed with local participation and symbolised Assam’s growing role as a key gateway to the northeastern region and beyond.” The new facility is anticipated to bolster the state’s connectivity and economic prospects.
Cultural Celebrations by the Guwahati Artists Guild
In addition to the airport’s opening, the Guwahati Artists Guild is celebrating its golden jubilee, marking 50 years of contribution to the visual arts in Assam. The celebrations commenced with an art exhibition titled “From the Land of Chitralekha,” inaugurated on March 9, 2026.
This exhibition features works by 32 women artists and aims to present a diverse range of visual languages, mediums, and materials. The exhibition will remain open to visitors daily from 3 pm to 8.30 pm until March 21, 2026.
The Guwahati Artists Guild, founded in 1976, has played a crucial role in fostering artistic expression in the region. The ongoing celebrations highlight both emerging voices and established artists, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of Assam.
Upcoming Events
As part of the celebrations, there are several upcoming events, including a theatrical performance by Papri Medhi scheduled for March 14 and a day-long documentary screening on March 15. These events are expected to further engage the community and promote the arts.
Meanwhile, in sports, the Rajasthan Royals are set to face the Chennai Super Kings in their opening match on March 30, 2026, at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati, marking another significant event for the city.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding further developments in both the airport’s operational impact and the cultural initiatives. However, the recent activities underscore Guwahati’s growing prominence as a hub for both transportation and the arts.
