Gujarat is gearing up for local body elections while marking a milestone in space research with its first sounding rocket launch.
The State Election Commission of Gujarat has announced the schedule for local body elections, which will have significant implications for governance in the region. Polling is set to take place on April 26, from 7 am to 6 pm, with the counting of votes occurring two days later on April 28.
These elections will cover a broad spectrum of local governance, including fifteen Municipal Corporations, eighty-four Municipalities, thirty-four District Panchayats, and two hundred and sixty Taluka Panchayats. Additionally, by-elections will be held for 13 seats across 11 municipalities, reflecting the dynamic political landscape of the state.
The nomination process for candidates will commence on April 6, with the last date for filing papers on April 11. Following this, scrutiny of nominations will take place on April 13, and candidates will have the opportunity to withdraw their nominations until April 15.
In a separate but equally noteworthy development, Gujarat has made strides in space research with the successful launch of its first sounding rocket at Dholera. This rocket reached an altitude of approximately three kilometres and was developed under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, utilizing advanced materials such as carbon fiber and composites.
Arjun Modhwadia remarked, “This achievement makes Gujarat a significant player in the private space sector,” highlighting the importance of this milestone for the state’s technological aspirations.
Furthermore, the state has also seen notable achievements in sports, with Nandre Burger reaching his 100th T20 wicket milestone against the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026, showcasing the diverse accomplishments emerging from this vibrant state.
