India experienced a productive day at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, securing one gold and two silver medals. This brings the nation’s total medal count to four, with strong performances noted across various disciplines.
Mirabai Chanu, an Olympic silver medallist, achieved her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal. Her victory was a highlight of Day 4, alongside silver medals earned by Rishikanta Singh and Raja Muthupandi in weightlifting. Indian boxers also continued their progress, and the men’s swimming relay team participated in a Commonwealth final.
Weightlifting success and records
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu reinforced her standing in Indian weightlifting by winning the gold medal in the women’s 48kg category. Despite an initial unsuccessful attempt, she delivered a dominant performance, achieving a combined lift of 190kg. Chanu set a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch with 85kg and lifted 105kg in the clean and jerk to secure her title.
This win marks Chanu’s third successive Commonwealth Games gold, following her victories in 2018 in Gold Coast and 2022 in Birmingham. Her overall Commonwealth Games medal tally now stands at four.
Rishikanta Singh Chanambam secured a silver medal in the men’s 60kg event. The lifter from Manipur equalled a Commonwealth Games record in the snatch. He concluded with a total lift of 264kg. Malaysia‘s Muhammad Anik bin Kasdan won gold with a total of 273kg, while Kenya‘s Joshua Amunga Buoya took bronze with 260kg.
Raja Muthupandi contributed another silver medal for India in weightlifting, competing in the men’s 65kg category. The lifter finished with a combined total of 286kg. Malaysia‘s Muhamad Aznil Bin Bidin claimed gold with a Commonwealth Games record total of 299kg, and Papua New Guinea‘s Morea Baru earned bronze with 282kg. This silver medal marks a return to the podium for Muthupandi, who had previously participated in Gold Coast in 2018.
Boxing and other events
Indian boxers had a strong showing, with Jadumani Singh Mandengbam advancing to the quarter-finals in the men’s 55kg category. He defeated Pakistan‘s Sumama Rehman by a unanimous 5-0 decision. Jadumani Singh is scheduled to face England‘s Ellis Trowbridge in the next round.
In the women’s 54kg Round of 16, Preeti Pawar secured her place in the quarter-finals by defeating Malawi‘s Deborah Mtenje via a referee stops contest (RSC) decision. However, Aditya Pratap Yadav faced a setback, losing to Uganda‘s Nuhu Batte in the men’s 65kg Round of 16 by a 3-2 split decision.
The India men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team, comprising Srihari Nataraj, Aryan Nehra, Aneesh Gowda, and Dhakshan Shashikumar, qualified for the final after finishing third in their heat. They later competed in the medal race, finishing sixth in the Commonwealth Games final.
In lawn bowls, India faced challenges. Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh lost to Namibia and then to England, concluding their campaign in the women’s pairs event. Putul Sonowal also lost his sectional play match in men’s singles against Malta‘s Shaun James Parnis.
Artistic gymnast Tapan Mohanty finished 15th in the men’s all-around final. India‘s women’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball team also experienced a defeat, losing 21-4 to Scotland in Pool B.
Day 4 concluded with India having accumulated four medals in total at the Games, including one gold and two silvers.
