Maxwell Phodo was named the Player of the Tournament in the 2025/26 Castel Challenge Cup, leading FCB Nyasa Big Bullets to victory with an impressive tally of seven goals. Phodo’s contributions were pivotal, as he scored more than half of the 12 goals netted by Bullets during the tournament.

Phodo’s remarkable performance included scoring seven goals in just five matches, showcasing his striking ability and crucial role in the team’s success. This victory marks a significant achievement for Bullets, who previously won the inaugural edition of the Castel Challenge Cup in 2023.

In contrast, FC Basel has struggled this season, failing to meet the high expectations set after their double-winning campaign last year. Xherdan Shaqiri, once a standout player, has not been able to replicate his previous form, prompting management to reassess the team’s strategy.

Pascal Zuberbühler, a key figure in FC Basel’s management, stated, “I’m taking Shaqiri completely out of the firing line,” indicating a shift in focus as the team seeks to regain its competitive edge. Blerim Dzemaili echoed this sentiment, asserting, “It’s definitely not down to him,” suggesting that the team’s struggles are not solely the responsibility of individual players.

In a separate development, Justice Gobin ruled that First Citizens Bank breached the employment contract of Stephen Pennie, the team’s manager. Pennie was awarded nine months’ salary, along with one month already paid, and the bank was ordered to pay three percent interest and cover his legal costs.

Justice Gobin remarked, “I find that FCB breached the Claimant’s contract of employment by denying him his contractual right to the procedure for the fair determination of disciplinary offences before terminating his employment for serious misconduct.” This ruling highlights ongoing issues within the management structure of the club.

The use of the absence of an explanation in the circumstances as a basis for summary dismissal was described by Justice Gobin as “egregious,” further complicating the situation for First Citizens Bank.

As observers look ahead, the focus will be on how FCB Nyasa Big Bullets can build on their recent success and whether FC Basel can turn their season around. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the future strategies of both teams as they navigate these challenges.
