Electric vehicles: How are  transforming Telangana’s mobility landscape?

Telangana is making strides in electric vehicle adoption with new battery swapping technology and significant discounts for government employees.

The Technology Development Board (TDB) has signed an agreement with InfinityX Innovations for the development of automated battery swapping infrastructure, a significant step towards enhancing electric mobility operations in Telangana, India. This innovative project aims to create IoT-enabled battery swapping stations, which can facilitate a complete battery swap in under 40 seconds.

Shri Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary of the TDB, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Accelerating the deployment of efficient and scalable charging alternatives is critical for the growth of India’s electric mobility ecosystem.” The introduction of such technology is expected to contribute to a standardized and interoperable battery swapping network across the country.

In addition to technological advancements, the Telangana government is also promoting electric vehicle adoption through financial incentives. State government employees can benefit from discounts of up to 20% on electric two- and four-wheelers, which could translate into savings of up to Rs 4 lakh per employee. This initiative is described as a first-of-its-kind in Telangana, potentially impacting around 5 lakh government employees.

As electric vehicles gain traction globally, the market dynamics are shifting. For instance, Germany and France reported battery electric vehicle (BEV) market shares of 22% and 27%, respectively, in early 2026. Meanwhile, Denmark experienced a remarkable increase in BEV market share, rising by 17 percentage points compared to the previous year.

The push for electric vehicles in Telangana is not just about reducing emissions; it also aims to make EV energy replenishment as quick and convenient as traditional refueling. The CEO and Founder of InfinityX Innovations noted, “Reducing battery transition time to under 40 seconds makes EV energy replenishment comparable to conventional refuelling.”

As these initiatives unfold, observers are keenly watching how they will influence the broader adoption of electric vehicles in India and whether they will set a precedent for other states to follow. The success of this battery swapping technology and the government’s incentives could play a crucial role in shaping the future of electric mobility in the region.
