Controversial Challenges Mark Early Game
The World Cup semi-final match between England and Argentina in Atlanta saw early controversy, with fans expressing frustration over refereeing decisions and VAR. An incident involving Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernandez was described as a “borderline assault” by some observers. The challenge occurred after Argentina players were reportedly upset about not receiving a foul call following a tackle on Lionel Messi. This led to Fernandez colliding with Anderson, resulting in an England free-kick.
During the match, Paul Robinson, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, commented on the challenge, calling it “awful” and noting that Fernandez had “absolutely clattered into the back of him.” Guy Mowbray further characterized the incident as a “borderline assault.” Despite the strong reactions, Fernandez did not receive a card for the challenge, which fueled anger among some fans on social media.
Concerns were also raised regarding the appointment of referee Ismail Elfath for the semi-final. Originally from Morocco, Elfath moved to America at the age of 18. He has officiated in Major League Soccer since 2012 and has twice been named MLS referee of the year. However, some football enthusiasts questioned his suitability for a match of such significance.
During the current tournament, Elfath had previously refereed Japan’s game against the Netherlands and Uruguay’s match with Spain in the group stage. He also oversaw Norway’s victory over Brazil in the round of 16.
Argentina’s Late Comeback and Sportsmanship Debate
England initially took the lead in the second half through Anthony Gordon’s goal, putting them in a strong position to reach their first World Cup final since 1966. However, Argentina mounted a late comeback, with goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez securing their place in the final. The match was characterized by a tense atmosphere throughout.
Following Fernandez’s equalizer, Argentina substitute Valentin Barco celebrated in front of the England dugout, an action that drew criticism. Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson described Barco’s celebration as “the worst example of sportsmanship we’ve seen at this World Cup.”

After the final whistle, England midfielder Jude Bellingham was seen confronting Barco, indicating his displeasure with the celebration. The incident highlighted the intense emotions and competitive spirit present in the semi-final encounter.
Reflections on England’s Defeat
Despite the heartbreaking loss for England, former player Alan Shearer acknowledged that the better team progressed to the final. Speaking on BBC One, Shearer praised Argentina’s reaction and their ability to stick to their game plan, noting that their substitutions were effective. He stated that Argentina deserved to be in the final.
Former England defender Matt Upson expressed the deep pain and frustration felt by players and fans alike. Upson pointed out that after taking the lead, England seemed to stop doing what had been effective, allowing Argentina to seize the momentum. He described watching the game slip away as a disappointing experience and highlighted the recurring pattern of exiting at this stage of the tournament.
Argentina will now face Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday. Spain secured their spot by defeating tournament favorites France in the other semi-final. Argentina previously won the World Cup in 2022 by beating France on penalties.
