NASA has announced the crew for the historic Artemis II mission, which will mark the first crewed journey beyond Earth’s orbit since Apollo 17 in 1972. The mission is set to include four astronauts: Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).
Scheduled to last 10 days, Artemis II will not involve a landing on the Moon but will take the crew on a lunar flyby. The spacecraft, Orion, was launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida and will travel up to an impressive 252,799 miles (406,840 km) from Earth, breaking the previous distance record set by Apollo 13.
During their journey, the astronauts will capture high-resolution photographs of the lunar surface, providing valuable data for future missions. Furthermore, they may have the opportunity to observe Comet C/2026 A1 (MAPS) during their mission, which is expected to make its closest approach to the sun on April 4, 2024.

Karl Battams, an expert on comets, noted, “Over the next few days, the comet is going to be experiencing the most hostile environment our solar system has to offer, and it will suffer accordingly.” He further speculated that the comet may disintegrate rapidly, leaving only a faint cloud of dust.
