Kullu Weather Update: Recent Snowfall Disrupts Traffic

Recent snowfall in Kullu has led to significant traffic disruptions, stranding over 1,000 vehicles. Weather alerts have been issued for the region.

Before the recent snowfall, Kullu was experiencing a dry spell, with expectations of mild weather continuing. However, on March 15, Kullu and Lahaul received fresh snowfall, which drastically altered the situation.

This sudden weather change resulted in heavy traffic disruptions, with more than 1,000 vehicles stranded at the south portal of the Atal Tunnel. The snowfall not only affected transportation but also prompted the Shimla Meteorological Office to forecast light rain and snow across the state until March 21.

In addition to the snowfall, an orange alert has been issued for lightning, thunderstorms, and winds in Kullu and Shimla, indicating a significant shift in weather conditions. Hail warnings have also been declared until March 19 for the Solan and Sirmaur districts, adding to the concerns of local residents.

On March 16, a yellow alert was issued for lightning, thunderstorms, and winds across 10 out of 12 districts, further emphasizing the severity of the weather situation. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that additional western disturbances are expected to affect northwest India starting March 17.

In Shimla, the recent hailstorm left significant portions of the city covered in white hailstones, marking a stark contrast to the prior dry conditions. Local resident Roshan noted, “The rainfall could replenish depleted water resources, offering a silver lining to the abrupt weather change after a long dry period.”

As the weather continues to evolve, residents and travelers in Kullu are advised to stay updated on the latest forecasts and heed any warnings issued by meteorological authorities. The impact of this weather shift is still unfolding, and details remain unconfirmed.
