Nepal Secures Victory in ICC CWC League 2 Against UAE

Nepal triumphed over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by 42 runs in a crucial match of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2, solidifying their position in the competition. After winning the toss, Nepal posted a total of 229 runs, setting a challenging target for the UAE.

Bhim Sarki was instrumental in Nepal’s innings, scoring 70 runs, while Aarif Sheikh contributed a valuable 43 runs. The UAE, in response, struggled to build partnerships and was ultimately bowled out for 187 runs in 45 overs. Asif Khan and Aryan Lakra were the standout performers for the UAE, scoring 82 and 50 runs respectively, but their efforts were not enough to secure a victory.

On the bowling front, Nepal’s Sompal Kami and Dipendra Singh Airee each took 3 wickets, playing a pivotal role in dismantling the UAE batting lineup. This victory propelled Nepal to the 5th position in the League 2 points table, which is crucial for their aspirations of retaining One Day International (ODI) status.

Nepal’s win keeps their hopes alive for World Cup qualification, as they now need to secure victories in two more matches. Currently, Scotland and Oman have already qualified for the World Cup with 50 and 44 points respectively, highlighting the competitive nature of the league.

The ICC Men’s ODI World Cup is set to take place in India starting from October 2023, making every match in the League 2 critical for teams vying for a spot in the prestigious tournament. Observers note that Nepal’s performance in the upcoming matches will be vital for their chances of qualification.

Looking ahead, Nepal is scheduled to play a triangular home series involving the UAE and Papua New Guinea (PNG), which will provide them with further opportunities to secure the necessary wins. The stakes are high as they aim to solidify their position in the ODI rankings.

As the tournament progresses, the focus will remain on how Nepal navigates the remaining matches and whether they can achieve their goal of retaining ODI status. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact dates and venues for the upcoming series.
