Historic Final Set for New York

The FIFA World Cup 2026 final between Argentina and Spain is poised to make history even before the match begins at the New York New Jersey Stadium. This will mark the first time since the FIFA rankings were introduced in 1992 that the world’s top two ranked teams will face each other in a World Cup final. Argentina entered the tournament as the number one ranked team, with Spain at number two.

Argentina is set to appear in their seventh FIFA World Cup final, matching Brazil for the second-most appearances in the championship match. Only Germany has played in more finals, with eight. This also marks Argentina’s first consecutive World Cup final appearance since 1986 and 1990.

The final will feature Lionel Messi and the defending champions, Argentina, against a Spain side that has maintained an unbeaten streak of 37 games, extending back to early 2024. Spain is aiming for their second FIFA World Cup title, having previously won in 2010. Argentina, meanwhile, seeks to become the first men’s team to win back-to-back World Cup titles since Brazil achieved the feat in 1958 and 1962.

Spain’s Defensive Prowess and Fan Support

Spain heads into the final following one of the most impressive defensive performances in World Cup history. La Roja has conceded only one goal across seven matches and has not been behind for a single second throughout the tournament. Should they win the title, they would surpass the defensive records set by Spain in 2010, Italy in 2006, and France in 1998, all of whom conceded only two goals en route to winning the World Cup.

In New York City, anticipation for the final is palpable, particularly among Spanish supporters. Robert Sanfiz, who oversees a Spanish nonprofit in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, has been managing numerous requests for a World Cup final watch party. His organization, the Spanish Benevolent Society, also known as La Nacional, has seen an increase in supporters of La Roja during the six-week tournament.

Sanfiz noted that Spain’s 2010 victory played a role in the revival of the organization, which was established 150 years ago to assist Spanish immigrants in the city. Despite the decline of the neighborhood’s Spanish enclave, the society continues to serve Spaniards who miss their home country. He recalled the tension before the 2010 final against the Netherlands in South Africa, when fans gathered outside to watch Spain secure their first championship.

The consistent performance of Spain’s squad this year, led by Lamine Yamal and the team-focused approach of manager Luis de la Fuente, has contributed to a calmer atmosphere for fans. Javier Vriz, who traveled from Chicago to attend the final, expressed his excitement, stating that being a lifelong Spain fan often meant experiencing disappointment, but the team’s continuous victories have changed that perception.

Spain fans are seen at Mercado Little Spain in Manhattan [Joseph Stepansky/Al Jazeera] Credit: aljazeera.com

A Growing Coalition of Supporters

Spain’s success in the tournament has attracted a diverse group of new supporters in New York City, including neutral fans whose preferred teams were eliminated earlier. This growing coalition includes fans from various communities. Rolando Sanchez, a resident of the Bronx who previously supported the Mexican national team, noted that many Mexican fans have expressed animosity towards Argentina.

The team’s appeal has also extended to Arab enclaves in the city, such as Brooklyn’s Little Palestine, partly due to Yamal’s paternal ties to Morocco and the Spanish government’s recognition of Palestinian statehood. Support has also been strong within New York City’s West African community, influenced by the heritage of Spain’s players. Yamal’s mother is from Equatorial Guinea, and winger Nico Williams’s parents are from Ghana.

The Spanish government’s approach to African migrants, which focuses on labor integration and legalisation for undocumented individuals, has further enhanced positive perceptions of Spain. Ousman Saho, a coach for Huntaz FC in the Bronx, expressed his hope that Spain’s young players, including Yamal, Gavi, and Williams, will achieve international glory. Mamadou Diabate, coach of the Bronx-based Los Espanoles FC, highlighted Spain’s teamwork and beautiful style of play.

The final will also mark the first time Messi plays against Spain since Argentina defeated the then-world champions in a friendly match in 2010. The match will also see Messi share the field with Spain star Lamine Yamal, who was photographed with the Argentine legend as a baby nearly two decades ago.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente anticipates a memorable contest, describing the two national teams as “superteams” with similar attitudes and talent, predicting an amazing final.

Mbappé’s Historic Achievement

Kylian Mbappé of France has made history by becoming the all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup history. This achievement occurred during France’s 6-4 defeat to England in the 2026 FIFA World Cup third-place playoff match. Mbappé scored two goals in the match, bringing his total career World Cup goals to 22, surpassing Lionel Messi’s previous record.

The match, held in Miami, saw Mbappé’s brace not only secure him the all-time scoring record but also place him at the top of the Golden Boot standings. He now has 10 goals in the 2026 World Cup, moving ahead of Messi, who had eight goals after the semi-finals.

The Thrilling Third-Place Playoff

The third-place playoff was a high-scoring affair, with England initially taking a significant lead. Declan Rice scored in the third minute, followed by Ezri Konsa in the 18th minute. Bukayo Saka added a brace in the first half, scoring in the 37th minute and again in first-half stoppage time, giving England a 4-0 lead at halftime.

France mounted a comeback in the second half, with Mbappé initiating the scoring three minutes in. Bradley Barcola further reduced the deficit in the 54th minute. Mbappé scored his second goal in the 66th minute, making the score 4-3 and securing his place as the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer. England eventually sealed their victory with Saka completing his hat-trick from a penalty in the 87th minute, and Jude Bellingham scoring a solo goal in the 98th minute, resulting in a 6-4 win for England.

Mbappé’s two goals also mean he has scored 19 non-penalty goals in World Cup history, exceeding Messi’s total of 17 in that category. The 27-year-old has maintained an impressive average of one goal per game across the 2018, 2022, and 2026 tournaments, having played in 22 World Cup appearances.

Golden Boot Race Intensifies

Mbappé’s performance significantly impacted the Golden Boot race. Before the third-place playoff, Messi led with eight goals and four assists, while Mbappé had eight goals and three assists. Following the match, Mbappé now leads with 10 goals and four assists.

The current standings for the Golden Boot are:

Kylian Mbappé (France): 10 goals, 4 assists

Lionel Messi (Argentina): 8 goals, 4 assists

Jude Bellingham (England): 7 goals, 1 assist

Ousmane Dembélé (France): 6 goals, 2 assists

Harry Kane (England): 6 goals, 1 assist

Despite Mbappé’s current lead, the Golden Boot race is not yet concluded. Messi is set to lead Argentina in the World Cup final against Spain at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday. This match offers the 39-year-old Messi a final chance to add to his goal tally and potentially reclaim both the tournament scoring record and the Golden Boot.

Mbappé’s World Cup journey includes winning the 2018 title and reaching the 2022 final, where he scored a hat-trick. He has also surpassed Olivier Giroud to become France’s all-time leading scorer. His latest achievements further solidify his remarkable career. Messi, along with Cristiano Ronaldo, has played in six World Cup tournaments, and Ronaldo is the first player to score in six World Cups.

England secures third place in high-scoring World Cup match against France

England emerged victorious in a thrilling World Cup third-place playoff, defeating France 6-4 in a match held at the Hard Rock Stadium. The game, which featured ten combined goals, marked the most goals in a World Cup match since 1982. This result secured England’s best World Cup finish since their win in 1966.

The match saw England establish an early lead, with Declan Rice scoring a long-range goal less than three minutes into the game. Ezri Konsa then headed home a corner from Rice approximately 15 minutes later, doubling England’s advantage. Bukayo Saka contributed two goals before halftime, giving England a commanding 4-0 lead at the break.

Despite the significant deficit, France mounted a strong comeback in the second half. Kylian Mbappé initiated their scoring a few minutes after the intermission, marking his ninth goal of the tournament and his 21st career World Cup goal, which equaled Lionel Messi’s record. Bradley Barcola scored ten minutes later, reducing England’s lead to 4-2. Mbappé scored again in the 66th minute, bringing France within one goal and making him the all-time leader in World Cup goals.

However, England reasserted their dominance. Bukayo Saka completed his hat-trick by converting a penalty in the 87th minute, restoring England’s two-goal advantage. Ousmane Dembele responded in stoppage time, giving France renewed hope and making the score 5-4. The match’s final goal came from substitute Jude Bellingham in the 98th minute, sealing the 6-4 victory for England.

Mbappé’s historic milestone

While France ultimately lost the match, Kylian Mbappé achieved a significant personal milestone. His second goal of the game, scored in the 66th minute, was his 22nd career World Cup strike, officially surpassing Lionel Messi’s previous all-time record of 21 goals. This goal also brought his tournament tally to 10 goals, placing him two clear of Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race.

Mbappé’s performance throughout the tournament was notable, with his goals contributing to France’s efforts. His first goal in the third-place match, scored in the 48th minute, was a flick past England goalkeeper Dean Henderson. His second, a left-footed strike from 14 yards, also beat Henderson.

Michael Olise of France was credited with assists on both of Kylian Mbappé’s goals in this match. Olise now holds seven assists in this World Cup, breaking Pelé’s record for the most assists in a single tournament.

Team changes and match details

Both teams made substitutions during the match. Didier Deschamps, in his final game after 14 years in charge of France, made a quadruple substitution at the start of the second half, bringing on Ousmane Dembele, Bradley Barcola, Lucas Digne, and Dayot Upamecano to replace Ibrahima Konate, Désiré Doué, Theo Hernandez, and Rayan Cherki. Thomas Tuchel, England’s manager, also made a substitution to start the second half, bringing on Ollie Watkins for Marcus Rashford. Later in the game, Tuchel introduced Jude Bellingham and Elliot Anderson in the 79th minute, replacing Eberechi Eze and Ivan Toney.

The starting lineup for England included Dean Henderson as goalkeeper; Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, Djed Spence, and Jarell Quansah in defense; Declan Rice, Morgan Rogers, and Eberechi Eze in midfield; and Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, and Ivan Toney in the forward line. Declan Rice wore the captain’s armband for England, with Harry Kane starting on the bench.

For France, the starting eleven featured Mike Maignan as goalkeeper; Malo Gusto, Ibrahima Konate, Theo Hernandez, and Maxence Lacroix in defense; Adrien Rabiot, Warren Zaire-Emery, and Rayan Cherki in midfield; and Kylian Mbappé, Michael Olise, and Désiré Doué as forwards. The match was officiated by referee Jesus Valenzuela, with Jorde Urrego and Tulio Morena as assistant referees, and Jalal Jayed as the fourth official.

The third-place match kicked off at 5 p.m. ET at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

Argentina’s Final Preparations

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni held a press conference ahead of the World Cup final against Spain. He discussed the team’s preparations and their approach to the upcoming match. Scaloni emphasised that the team prepares for this final just as they do for every other match, with a strong desire for a positive outcome and a thorough analysis of their opponent. He noted the importance of the team performing at their best to secure a victory.

Scaloni mentioned that the team is in good condition, despite acknowledging areas for improvement. He highlighted that Argentina is a well-known team to their opponents, which he believes adds to the merit of reaching the final. The coach expressed the team’s determination to win the final match.

The coach also addressed the team’s schedule, noting that they had to train on an undesirable timetable and were focused on resting. He indicated that while some players might not be at 100%, he expected all players to be well for the important training session scheduled before the final. The final match between Argentina and Spain is set to take place in New York, United States.

Scaloni on Messi and Team Spirit

During the press conference, Scaloni spoke about the emotional connection between the team and their supporters. He stated that it is impossible for the team not to be moved by the passion of their fans, and that they play for the people. Scaloni believes the team has restored a valuable sense of unity, where fans from different clubs can come together to support the national side. He also noted that showing emotions is a natural part of life and makes them more human.

Scaloni expressed immense gratitude from the coaching staff to the players, acknowledging the difficulty of competing at a high level for an extended period. He described their journey as incredible and an example for everyone, hoping for a victory in the final.

The coach recounted a moment with Lionel Messi after a match against England, where Messi told him, “we are pure history.” Scaloni responded by saying that Messi himself is pure history and a legend. He expressed pride in hearing the greatest footballer think about the team, calling it a wonderful sentiment. Scaloni also marvelled at Messi’s ability to reach a final at his current age, describing it as incredible. He stressed the importance of valuing Messi’s contributions and the legend he represents, along with the group of players who have delivered wonderful years for the national team.

When asked if the World Cup final would be Messi’s last match with Argentina, Scaloni stated that he had no idea and that it was a question for Messi himself, adding that Messi never ceases to surprise.

Tactical Outlook Against Spain

Scaloni also provided insights into the upcoming match against Spain. He observed that both national teams build their play around ball possession. He noted that while there might be some nuances, both teams share similar patterns of play revolving around the ball. Scaloni explained that Argentina has been analysing potential World Cup opponents since December, and that their analysis of Spain was not more extensive than for any other team. He cautioned against over-analysis, stating that Argentina is a national team that knows itself well.

He further commented on Spain’s performance, noting their progression throughout the tournament. Scaloni highlighted that Spain’s most recent match, against a strong opponent like France, was their best performance. The press conference took place on July 17, 2026, in New York, United States, ahead of the final match.

Firouzja’s strong start at Chennai Grandmasters

Alireza Firouzja secured his second consecutive victory at the 4th Quantbox Chennai Grandmasters 2026, defeating World Champion D Gukesh. This win marks Firouzja as the only player to achieve two wins in the initial two rounds of the tournament. His first-round victory was against Pranesh M, followed by his recent triumph over Gukesh. This performance has given Firouzja a full-point lead after just two rounds, as all other games in the second round concluded in draws.

The tournament is structured as an 8-Player Single Round-Robin, featuring seven rounds of classical chess. The time control for each game is 90 minutes for the entire match, with an additional 30-second increment starting from the first move. The event is being held at The Westin Chennai Velachery.

A challenging encounter for Gukesh

The game between Firouzja and Gukesh was described as a rollercoaster, with both players experiencing significant pressure, particularly under time constraints. Mistakes were made by both competitors during the match. Firouzja initially gained an advantage in the middlegame, but this lead fluctuated throughout the contest. Ultimately, Gukesh made the decisive error, allowing Firouzja to secure the win.

The game began with the Ruy Lopez opening, and Firouzja demonstrated several strategic ideas. A critical moment occurred when Gukesh played 58…h5 under time pressure, which proved to be a significant misstep. This move was disadvantageous as Firouzja’s king was in a strong position near the pawns, while Gukesh’s king was distant.

The tournament offers a substantial prize fund of ₹75,00,000. Additionally, there are significant FIDE Circuit points available, which are crucial for players aiming for the next Candidates cycle. These factors contribute to the high stakes and competitive nature of the event.

Tournament structure and upcoming rounds

The 4th Quantbox Chennai Grandmasters 2026 is a key event in the chess calendar, drawing top players to compete for both monetary prizes and important ranking points. The format ensures that each player faces every other participant once, providing a comprehensive test of skill and endurance over the seven rounds.

The third round of the tournament is scheduled to commence on 18th July at 3:30 PM IST. Chess enthusiasts can follow the progress of the tournament, which features world-class players demonstrating their strategic prowess and tactical understanding.

For those interested in improving their chess skills, resources like ChessBase Magazine offer training material for club players and professionals. This includes analyses by grandmasters such as Aravindh, Giri, Gurel, and Navara, as well as opening videos and articles with new repertoire ideas. The magazine aims to provide insights into brilliant games, explain the ideas behind moves, and present the latest trends in opening theory.

Master trainers contribute content on tactics, strategy, and endgames, offering techniques for successful tournament play. The ChessBase Magazine #225 is available as a direct download, including a booklet in PDF format, or as a booklet with a download key via post. It is also compatible with devices such as iPad, tablets, and Mac.

The ongoing tournament in Chennai serves as a platform for elite chess competition, with players like Firouzja and Gukesh showcasing their abilities. The next round will continue to unfold at 3:30 PM IST on 18th July.

By Vikram Iyer — 18 July 2026 — 4 min read

The upcoming World Cup final in the New York New Jersey Stadium, also known as MetLife Stadium, is facing several challenges, including lingering smoke from Canadian wildfires, complex travel logistics, and the anticipated presence of Donald Trump. The final is scheduled for Sunday, and while officials express confidence in conditions improving, recent events have highlighted potential difficulties.

Smoke from wildfires in Canada has spread across much of the eastern seaboard, leading to air quality alerts in various US states. On Thursday, air quality advisories in the New York City metro area were elevated from “unhealthy” to “very unhealthy.” This thick haze has significantly impacted visibility, obscuring landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building, and even leading to flight cancellations from Newark airport in New Jersey.

Emergency management officials in New York City issued a citywide code red from Tuesday to Thursday, advising residents to remain indoors and avoid strenuous physical activity. These conditions are far from ideal for a major global sporting event expected to draw a worldwide television audience of 1.6 billion. While conditions began to improve on Friday, with rain forecast for Saturday, the impact on sports has already been observed.

For instance, a National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) match between Gotham and Washington Spirit in Queens on Wednesday was played amidst an orange-brown haze. Players in that match were required to take two additional breaks during each half, adhering to the NWSL’s poor air quality policy. The possibility of similar stoppages in the World Cup final could lead to further discussion, especially given previous controversies surrounding hydration breaks introduced by Fifa.

Despite these environmental challenges, New York has shown strong engagement with the World Cup. All seven previous games held at MetLife Stadium have been sold out. Restaurant and bar bookings for viewing parties, such as England’s semi-final match against Argentina, were reportedly difficult to secure, indicating significant local interest in the tournament.

Beyond the weather, travel to the stadium presents another significant concern. MetLife Stadium is known among NFL fans for its limited public transport options and the difficulties associated with navigating the Lincoln Tunnel, which connects Manhattan to New Jersey. Parking on Sunday is restricted to guests and VIPs, and the cost of public transport, including bus and rail, has been substantially increased for the tournament.

Initially, a return ticket price of $150 for New Jersey Transit trains was set. However, a joint intervention and subsidy from the governments of New York and New Jersey reduced this to $98 for a journey that typically takes around 20 minutes. For those finding these prices prohibitive, shuttle buses from Manhattan will be available at a cost of $20.

Another factor drawing attention is the expected arrival of Donald Trump. His helicopter, Marine One, is anticipated to fly over the stadium before landing at nearby Teterboro airport. Fifa is reportedly managing his presence, especially after a previous incident where he appeared to join Chelsea’s celebrations after their Club World Cup victory, which reportedly left captain Reece James surprised.

To address potential issues, Fifa has confirmed that Donald Trump will present the trophy alongside Gianni Infantino. This arrangement follows a precedent set four years prior when the emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, placed a traditional Arab cloak on Lionel Messi before he collected the trophy. Fifa officials held discussions with Donald Trump at Trump Tower on Friday afternoon, a meeting that necessitated road closures and caused disruption on Fifth Avenue.

Fifa confirmed on Friday that the negative air quality from the wildfires did not currently pose a threat to the World Cup final. Earlier in the day, tournament organizers stated they were closely monitoring the situation. Andrew Giuliani, Executive Director of the White House World Cup task force, noted that a representative from the National Weather Service is stationed at Fifa headquarters to assist with monitoring.

Meteorologists have provided insights into the smoke situation. Peter Mullinax, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service, indicated that winds over the Great Lakes could push more smoke into the northeastern US, potentially maintaining hazy skies. However, he also mentioned that forecasts for the region anticipate some improvement. Joel Dreessen, an air quality forecaster for Maryland, highlighted that the key concern for the final is whether more smoke drifts south after weekend storm systems, as some models suggest this could occur.

While the smoke has been a recent concern, the region has also experienced other weather-related issues. Earlier in the tournament, a World Cup knockout match between Mexico and Ecuador was delayed for an hour due to stormy weather. Additionally, concerns about extreme heat in July prompted warnings regarding potential heat safety issues for some knockout matches, with a powerful “heat dome” bringing high temperatures to several host cities.

The Canadian wildfires, which are the source of the smoke, continue to be active, with over 200 fires burning out of control in Canada, particularly in Ontario. As of last Friday, nearly 1.6 million hectares had burned since the start of the year, a figure that escalated to nearly 2.8 million hectares by the most recent government figures.

By Vikram Iyer — 18 July 2026 — 3 min read

England manager Thomas Tuchel has called upon his squad to conclude their World Cup campaign strongly. This message was delivered in an emotional address to the players following their semi-final defeat against Argentina.

The team returned to their base in Kansas City after the loss on Wednesday. They are scheduled to conduct two final training sessions ahead of Saturday’s bronze-medal match against France. Sources indicate that Tuchel encouraged his players to move past their disappointment and aim for a positive finish to the tournament.

Aiming for a Strong Finish

Should England secure a victory against France in Miami to claim third place, it would mark their most successful men’s World Cup performance since their tournament win in 1966. Tuchel reportedly expressed his pride in the team’s efforts throughout their time in North America, noting that this marked only the fourth time in their history that the Three Lions reached a World Cup semi-final.

The relationship between the 52-year-old German coach and his players has become a notable point of discussion following Argentina’s 2-1 victory. This match saw Argentina score two late goals, turning the tide of the game.

Reports on Thursday highlighted that several key players were reportedly disappointed with the tactical instructions given towards the end of the match, particularly after Anthony Gordon had put England in the lead. Tuchel’s decision to revert to a back five and introduce several defensive-minded substitutions in the closing stages coincided with Lionel Messi’s instrumental role in Argentina’s comeback. Messi assisted goals for Enzo Fernandez and then for Lautaro Martinez’s 92nd-minute winner.

However, the England head coach has since appeared to counter the notion that the defensive strategy was a direct result of his specific directions. He stated that it was not the plan for the team to drop deeper, suggesting that controlling the game and ball in such a manner might not be inherent to the team’s playing style.

Looking Ahead to the Bronze Medal Match

Tuchel is anticipated to address questions regarding his team’s tactical approach against Argentina during the pre-match news conference for the France game. This conference is scheduled to take place at 00:30 BST on Saturday.

The former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager extended his contract by two years in February, having initially been appointed in January 2025 with an 18-month mandate to secure the 2026 World Cup. It is understood that Tuchel continues to have the support of the Football Association and is expected to lead the team into the 2028 European Championship, which will be co-hosted by England, Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland.

The 2-1 loss to Argentina in the World Cup semi-final has been described by some as a particularly traumatic event in English sporting history. The disappointment follows a long history of challenges for England in major tournaments.

Despite the recent setback, the focus remains on the upcoming bronze-medal match. The team’s performance in North America, reaching a semi-final, represents a significant achievement in their World Cup history. The match against France offers an opportunity to conclude the tournament on a positive note and achieve their best finish since 1966.

The tactical decisions made during the semi-final have generated considerable discussion, particularly the shift to a more defensive setup. Tuchel’s comments suggest a nuanced perspective on the team’s approach, indicating that the deep defensive posture was not a planned directive. The upcoming press conference will likely provide further insights into the manager’s reflections on the semi-final and his expectations for the match against France.

The bronze-medal match against France is scheduled for Saturday in Miami.

By Vikram Iyer — 18 July 2026 — 3 min read

The White House has defended the Argentinian national football team‘s right to free speech after players displayed a banner supporting their country’s territorial claim to the Falkland Islands. The incident occurred during celebrations following their World Cup semi-final victory against England.

Andrew Giuliani, head of the White House Fifa task force, stated that the team had the opportunity to express such statements in the United States, referencing the country’s First Amendment rights. These comments come amidst calls from Downing Street for Fifa to investigate the matter.

Falklands dispute and team’s actions

The Falkland Islands, a British overseas territory in the south-west Atlantic Ocean, are subject to an ongoing sovereignty dispute between the United Kingdom and Argentina. After their semi-final match, Argentinian players held a banner that read “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” which translates to “The Falklands are Argentine.” This display has intensified the debate surrounding the islands’ status.

PA Media Several Argentinian football players standing on a pitch holding a banner saying "Las Malvinas Son Argentinas" Credit: bbc.com

Downing Street has supported calls for Fifa to investigate the incident, with the prime minister’s official spokesperson asserting that while the World Cup might not belong to the UK, the Falkland Islands definitely do. The spokesperson added that any potential action against the Argentinian players is a matter for Fifa, echoing the view that the world football governing body should conduct an investigation.

The government of the Falkland Islands expressed disappointment but not surprise regarding the banner. They hope that Fifa will “sanction all behaviour of this nature in line with its own rules,” emphasizing a desire to keep politics separate from sport and prevent the islands from being used as a “political football.”

In 2013, a referendum in the Falkland Islands saw an overwhelming majority of residents vote to remain a UK overseas territory. Out of 1,517 votes cast, 1,513 were in favour of remaining a UK territory, with only three votes against.

Fifa’s review and historical context

Fifa has initiated a disciplinary review following the display of the banner. Players including Lisandro Martínez, Giovani Lo Celso, and Cristian Romero were seen holding the banner during the post-match celebrations. Fifa‘s Stadium Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Code prohibit the display of political, ideological, or offensive banners, flags, and slogans during official competitions.

A spokesperson for Fifa confirmed that the matter has been referred to the organization’s independent Disciplinary Committee. This committee is currently reviewing official match reports to determine if any disciplinary action is required under the Fifa Disciplinary Code. As of now, Fifa has not announced any sanctions, and Argentina is scheduled to play Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday.

This is not the first time the Argentinian Football Association has faced scrutiny over similar actions. In 2014, Fifa fined the association £20,000 for displaying a banner with the same message before a friendly match against Slovenia. At that time, Fifa stated that the gesture violated rules concerning political action and team misconduct.

The dispute over the Falkland Islands, known as ‘Las Malvinas’ in Argentina, dates back to the early 19th century. The UK first claimed the islands in 1774 and re-established control in 1832. A brief but intense conflict, the Falklands War, occurred in 1982 when Argentina‘s military government invaded the islands. The conflict lasted from April 2 to June 14, ending with Argentina‘s surrender. The war resulted in the deaths of 255 British military personnel, three islanders, and 649 Argentine soldiers.

Argentina‘s Vice-President, Victoria Villarruel, also posted on X after the victory, stating that “it wasn’t just another match” and that the Falklands are Argentine, adding that even though bringing banners to the stadium was banned, the sentiment is carried “in our blood and our hearts.”

Argentinian players also sang chants referencing the Falklands and football legends Maradona and Lionel Messi after their 3-2 win over Egypt in the last 16 round.

By Vikram Iyer — 17 July 2026 — 3 min read

Reports regarding Mohamed Salah’s potential move to Besiktas have been denied by his agent, Ramy Abbas Issa. Speculation had suggested that the former Liverpool forward was close to joining the Turkish club. However, Issa clarified that no decision has been made about Salah’s future.

Salah concluded his nine-year tenure at Anfield after agreeing with Liverpool to cancel his contract at the end of last season. During his time with the Reds, Salah, who arrived from Roma in 2017, achieved significant success, including winning the Champions League, two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, the EFL Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, the Club World Cup, and the Community Shield.

He made 315 Premier League appearances for Liverpool, placing him fifth in the club’s all-time list for the competition. Salah is also one of only 10 players to have been both the leading goalscorer and top assister for a club in the Premier League, having scored 191 goals in the competition.

Salah’s Future and Other Transfer Rumours

Issa addressed the recent reports on social media platform X, stating, “I personally do not know where Mohamed will play next season. What does that tell you?” He also previously posted, “It is not our style to have discussions with clubs that Mohamed wouldn’t want to play for, just for the sake of noise.” These statements came after widespread reports on Friday indicated an agreement with Besiktas.

Salah has been frequently linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League in recent years. His financial demands are reportedly a factor, with some Saudi clubs said to be hesitant due to the Egypt international’s requests.

Recently, Salah captained Egypt to the round of 16 at the World Cup, where they were defeated 3-2 by Argentina. Egypt had held a 2-0 lead until the 79th minute of that match.

European and Other Club Interests

In other transfer news, Bayern Munich has reportedly informed Real Madrid that Michael Olise, their France forward, is not available for transfer this summer. Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund’s Germany attacker Karim Adeyemi is reportedly set to join Barcelona.

Arsenal and Liverpool are reportedly competing for the signature of RB Leipzig and Netherlands defender Lutsharel Geertruida, who spent last season on loan at Sunderland. Manchester City and Tottenham are said to be interested in Portuguese winger Francisco Trincao, who could be moving to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli from Sporting.

Barcelona is reportedly planning to intensify their pursuit of Atletico Madrid and Argentina forward Julian Alvarez after the conclusion of this summer’s World Cup. Hull City has reportedly made a bid for Mjallby midfielder and Swedish World Cup star Elliot Stroud.

Manchester United is reportedly looking to sign two additional midfielders after finalizing a deal for Chelsea and Brazil international Andrey Santos. Greece centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos, who had an impressive season at relegated West Ham, is attracting interest from several Premier League clubs and teams across Europe.

Como is reportedly hoping to sign Colombia defender Davison Sanchez, but Galatasaray’s asking price could be a hurdle. Manchester United is also in search of a goalkeeper to compete with Belgian Senne Lammens, and Paraguay’s Orlando Gill from Argentine side San Lorenzo is understood to be a potential target.

Newcastle United’s chances of acquiring England goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City have reportedly increased, as Aston Villa, a potential rival for his signature, is keen to retain their number one goalkeeper, Argentine Emiliano Martinez. However, Chelsea is also reportedly interested in Trafford. New Benfica boss Marco Silva is reportedly looking to sign his former Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha, who was on loan at Tottenham last season from Bayern Munich.

By Vikram Iyer — 17 July 2026 — 3 min read

The Major League Cricket (MLC) eliminator at the Oakland Coliseum saw Washington Freedom achieve the highest successful run chase in T20 history, defeating defending champions MI New York by six wickets. The match on Tuesday was notable for three batters scoring centuries, a first in men’s T20 cricket.

Steve Smith of Washington Freedom scored his fastest career century, reaching the milestone in 40 balls. His innings included nine sixes and helped his team chase down MI New York’s total of 9-266. Smith remained unbeaten on 110 from 48 balls, marking his seventh T20 century.

The chase was anchored by a significant partnership between Smith and local player Andries Gous. Gous scored 132 runs from 51 balls, hitting 12 sixes and 10 fours, with a strike rate of 258.82. He was named Player of the Match for his performance. This knock made Gous the first domestic player to score a century in the United States-based league.

The partnership between Gous and Smith for the third wicket was a crucial 241-run stand from just 89 balls. This stand is considered the highest third-wicket partnership in the T20 format and the joint second-highest for any wicket in men’s T20 cricket. They revived the chase after Washington Freedom had an early setback, losing Mitch Owen for 1 run and Rachin Ravindra for 6 runs, leaving the team at 2-10.

The Ricky Ponting-coached Freedom reached 4-270 with eight balls remaining, surpassing Punjab Kings’ 265 from earlier this year as the highest successful chase in all men’s T20 cricket. Glenn Maxwell hit the winning runs with a swept six in the penultimate over, securing the victory for the 2024 MLC champions.

Before Washington Freedom’s chase, MI New York’s Nicholas Pooran had scored a 31-ball century, which was the fastest century in Major League Cricket history and the equal sixth fastest of all time in T20s. Pooran’s innings included 13 sixes. He, along with Kieron Pollard, who scored 64 off 25 balls and hit eight sixes, put MI New York in a strong position.

Pooran and Smith also became only the fourth pair of captains to score hundreds in the same men’s T20 game. The match yielded a combined total of 536 runs in 38.4 overs, with the two teams clearing the boundary a record 51 times on the converted baseball field, which has an average boundary size of roughly 65m.

Rachin Ravindra, the New Zealand all-rounder, played a significant role with the ball for Washington Freedom, claiming 4-29. His spell was introduced when MI New York were 211 for 3 after 13 overs, and his wickets in the 14th, 16th, 18th, and 20th overs helped limit MI New York’s total to 266 for 9.

The result means Washington Freedom will now advance to the Challenger final, where they are scheduled to face San Francisco Unicorns. The winner of that match will then proceed to the final on Saturday night to play against Los Angeles Knight Riders in Oakland.

Earlier in the day, San Francisco captain Matt Short’s 94 not out from 62 balls was not enough, as his side fell seven runs short of LA’s 3-187 in the Qualifier.
