DP World has proactively implemented contingency measures to reroute cargo destined for Jebel Ali Port through alternative coastal facilities in response to heightened geopolitical instability in West Asia. This initiative aims to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for approximately 20% of the world’s crude oil and a significant share of LNG, thereby mitigating risks for maritime transit.
The company has activated plans to redirect cargo through Khorfakkan and Fujairah ports. Jebel Ali Port, which has an annual container handling capacity exceeding 19 million TEUs, is projected to reach 22.4 million TEUs in the near future. Meanwhile, Khorfakkan Container Terminal boasts an annual capacity of 5 million TEUs, and Fujairah Port has a container throughput of 720,000 TEUs.
In addition to rerouting, DP World is managing the onward transportation of containers via bonded road transit to Jebel Ali. This strategic flexibility allows the company to maintain operations despite the ongoing regional tensions.
The conflict in West Asia poses a significant threat to Indian agricultural exports, valued at approximately $11.8 billion annually. Notably, rice exports from India to the Gulf amounted to $4.43 billion in the past year, highlighting the importance of these trade routes.
DP World emphasizes that these alternative ports are not merely substitutes but integral components of its network, enabling strategic flexibility during periods of high regional risk.
