Cancer patient: How a ‘s Request for Companionship Sparked Community Kindness

A simple request for companionship by a cancer patient in China ignited a wave of kindness from local delivery riders, highlighting the importance of emotional support during treatment.

A 24-year-old cancer patient in Foshan, China, made a heartfelt request for two hours of companionship through a meal delivery service, which unexpectedly ignited a wave of goodwill from local delivery riders.

The patient, known as ‘Little Li’, is currently battling a rare form of blood cancer. Feeling isolated during her treatment—especially with her brother busy with an internship and her father working overseas to cover medical expenses—Li sought emotional support. After her appeal, many riders volunteered to visit her and offer their companionship.

Before making this touching request, Li had undergone her fourth round of chemotherapy. Her condition has since stabilized, and she was discharged from the hospital on April 20. This context matters because it highlights the emotional struggles faced by cancer patients during treatment.

The initial rider who fulfilled Li’s request shared her story with a local rider club. This prompted others to step forward as well. As word spread on social media, the community rallied around Li, demonstrating profound kindness. Riders adjusted their schedules to visit her, bringing along items like milk, snacks, stuffed toys, and books.

One rider, Huang from Guangzhou, traveled three hours just to comfort Li after hearing about her situation. He expressed his motivation succinctly: “I felt sympathy and empathy, so I wanted to visit her.” Another rider named Wang, a 60-year-old cancer survivor herself, sent flowers and shared her own resilience with Li.

This remarkable story underscores not only the power of community but also the vital role that emotional support plays in the experience of cancer treatment.
