As the cricketing calendar heats up, Alzarri Joseph has made headlines by opting to miss the West Indies Championship season to participate in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). This decision comes at a crucial time for the West Indies team, which is gearing up for a demanding international schedule.

On April 9, Jayden Seales will be available for selection, followed by Shamar Joseph on April 13. Their return is significant as Cricket West Indies (CWI) has confirmed plans to manage the workload of these fast bowlers, including Joseph, in light of a packed season ahead.

The West Indies will host Sri Lanka and Pakistan for two Test matches each as part of the ICC World Test Championship, which is vital for the team’s standing. Currently, the West Indies sit at the bottom of the ICC World Test Championship standings, having lost seven Test matches and drawn one.

CWI director Miles Bascombe emphasized the importance of the fast bowlers, stating, “Our fast bowlers are among our most valuable assets, and this season demands the best of them across every format and every competition.” This highlights the strategic importance of maintaining their fitness and performance levels.

In addition to the Test matches, the West Indies will also play a five-game ODI series against New Zealand later in the year. CWI’s management plans are deliberate and proactive, aiming to ensure that players like Jayden, Shamar, and Alzarri are fit and available when it counts most.

Joseph’s absence from the West Indies Championship raises questions about the team’s depth and strategy as they prepare for these critical fixtures. With the international calendar packed, the focus will be on ensuring that the pace trio maintains optimum fitness.

As the cricketing world watches, the implications of Joseph’s decision will unfold, impacting not just his career but also the West Indies team’s performance in upcoming matches. CWI’s commitment to prioritizing the long-term health and performance of its players is evident, but the immediate effects of this decision remain to be seen.

In summary, Alzarri Joseph’s choice to play in the PSL instead of the West Indies Championship is a significant development that could influence the team’s dynamics and performance in the months ahead.

West Indies Cricket Team Stranded in Kolkata

The West Indies cricket team is stranded in Kolkata after their T20 World Cup exit, having lost to India by five wickets. This unexpected situation has left the team awaiting travel arrangements as they navigate the complexities of international flight logistics.

Following their elimination from the tournament, Cricket West Indies is coordinating a charter flight for the team, which is expected to depart within the next 24 hours, pending air traffic approvals. Akeal Hosein humorously appealed to football star Cristiano Ronaldo for assistance, saying, “At this point, I’m better off asking Cristiano Ronaldo to send the jet and come rescue me, yes?”

The team’s return has been complicated by geopolitical tensions affecting flight paths, particularly due to the ongoing conflict involving the USA, Israel, and Iran. This situation has raised concerns about the safety and timing of their departure.

Darren Sammy, the head coach of the West Indies cricket team, has sought clarity on travel logistics from the International Cricket Council (ICC) as the team remains safe while waiting for arrangements to be finalized. Cricket West Indies confirmed, “The team remains safe and well as arrangements continue to be finalized.”

Some players may opt to stay in India to join their franchises for the Indian Premier League, which adds another layer of complexity to the situation. The T20 World Cup 2026 final is set to take place between India and New Zealand in Ahmedabad, further highlighting the cricketing events unfolding in the region.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact timing of the charter flight’s departure, as it is subject to final air traffic approvals. The West Indies cricket team, having faced a challenging tournament, now faces the additional hurdle of returning home amid these logistical issues.

Samson remains unbeaten on 97 as the West Indian bowlers struggle in Kolkata, paving the way for India to secure a spot in the World Cup semifinal against England.

Sanju Samson delivered one of the most composed performances during a tense run chase, leading India to a five-wicket victory over the West Indies in Kolkata and securing a spot in the T20 World Cup semifinals.

Samson, who made his return to the Indian playing XI in the last match after being sidelined for three previous games, finished unbeaten on 97 as India secured a remarkable victory in front of a full house at Eden Gardens on Sunday.

The wicketkeeper-batter was the sole Indian player to achieve over 30 runs as the defending champions confronted the Maroons in a crucial Super Eight match where the stakes were high.

During the match, Samson achieved the highest score by an Indian in a T20 World Cup run chase, surpassing Virat Kohli’s 82 runs against Australia in 2016 and Pakistan in 2022.

The cohosts are set to compete against England in the second semifinal in Mumbai on Thursday, while New Zealand will clash with South Africa in the first match of the final four on Wednesday in Kolkata.

Samson’s composed attitude amidst a challenging target and an eager home audience set the stage for India’s pursuit after the early loss of star batsman Abhishek Sharma in the third over.

The 31-year-old player from southern India seized control of the match, consistently finding the boundary during his 50-ball innings. Samson’s unbeaten score of 97 included 12 fours and four sixes.

Although he received some temporary backing from the top and middle order batsmen of India, none managed to exceed the 20-run threshold until Tilak Varma achieved 27 runs off 15 deliveries in a partnership worth 42 runs with Samson.

Suryakumar Yadav (18) and Hardik Pandya (17) also played vital roles in the team’s total, which was finalized with two boundaries struck by Samson in the final over.

Promotion

In the match between West Indies and India, pacers Shamar Joseph and Jason Holder each claimed two wickets, while their fellow players found it challenging to stem the tide of runs being scored by Samson.

Previously, a 68-run opening stand by captain Shai Hope and Roston Chase provided the West Indies with a rapid beginning to their innings.

Chase, who hit 40 runs off 25 deliveries, was the more dynamic of the two opening batsmen as he capitalized on his dropped catch by Abhishek Sharma, aggressively targeting Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah during the initial six overs.

Hope was dismissed for 32 runs following a lackluster performance and was substituted by the in-form Shimron Hetmyer.

The fifth-ranked leading run-scorer of the cricket tournament raced to 27 runs off just 12 deliveries before being dismissed caught behind off Bumrah’s bowling.

India appeared to have the upper hand early on as the West Indies found themselves at 119-4 by the 15th over. However, a powerful finish from Rovman Powell and Jason Holder propelled the 2012 and 2016 champions to a total of 195.

Powell remained not out on 34 while Holder scored 37 off just 22 deliveries as they aimed to apply pressure on the pre-tournament favorites in front of a full house at Eden Gardens.

Bumrah stood out among the Indian bowlers, claiming two vital wickets in his four-over spell.

Pandya and Varun Chakravarthy took the remaining two wickets of the West Indies players.
