On May 4, 2026, Vishnu Pooja was conducted for Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on the very day that vote counting began across the state. This unusual occurrence set a distinctive atmosphere for an event that many anticipated with a mix of excitement and anxiety.

Prior to this day, expectations ran high. Many believed that the results would reflect a significant shift in voter sentiment. The backdrop included intense campaigning and speculation about how various parties would fare in this critical election.

But as the day unfolded, the atmosphere shifted dramatically. Vote counting commenced at 8:00 AM across 140 centers in Kerala. Initially, postal ballots were counted before moving on to EVM results at 8:30 AM. This structured approach aimed to ensure accuracy amidst heightened public interest.

The immediate numbers revealed a mixed bag of outcomes for various parties. For instance, in West Bengal, counting was also underway for 293 constituencies, where security protocols had been tightened significantly—reducing counting centers from 108 to 77. Such measures reflected a broader concern over maintaining order during this crucial process.

This context matters because it illustrates how different states manage their electoral processes under varying circumstances. While Kerala focused on spiritual observance with the Vishnu Pooja, West Bengal emphasized security and procedural integrity.

The implications for the parties involved are profound. The Trinamool Congress faced challenges in West Bengal due to these heightened security measures and logistical changes. In contrast, Kerala’s approach seemed to blend tradition with modern electoral processes.

Security protocols were particularly strict in both regions. In Kerala, QR-code identification was implemented at counting centers to enhance transparency and trust among voters. Meanwhile, observers deployed in West Bengal numbered around 242, ensuring that every step of the counting was monitored closely.

This juxtaposition raises an important question: How do cultural practices influence political outcomes? The answer lies in understanding that while electoral systems may be similar, local customs can significantly shape voter engagement and perception.

The Election Commission has made real-time results accessible via results.eci.gov.in and the ECINET app, allowing citizens to stay informed as events unfold. This digital engagement is becoming increasingly vital in modern elections.

As we await further developments from both states, one thing is clear: elections are not just about numbers; they’re also about narratives—narratives shaped by culture, tradition, and public sentiment.

The Congress-led UDF is on track to challenge the LDF's hold on Kerala in the upcoming Assembly elections. Exit polls suggest a close race.

The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is likely to dash Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s hopes of securing a third consecutive term in Kerala. According to exit polls, the UDF is projected to secure 70-75 seats in the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections.

That context matters because it suggests a significant shift in the state’s political landscape. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) is projected to secure 60-65 seats, while the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is expected to secure just 3-5 seats. With a total of 140 Assembly seats, the majority mark stands at 71 seats.

The voter turnout was notably high at 78.27%, reflecting strong public engagement in this election cycle. This election follows a historic verdict in 2021, when the LDF broke Kerala’s long-standing pattern of alternating governments every five years.

What do these numbers mean? They indicate a neck-and-neck contest between the UDF and LDF, with many voters seemingly ready for change. The UDF aims to replace an incumbent government that has held power since 2016.

However, caution is warranted; as one analyst noted, “Exit polls are just predictions based on surveys and can turn out to be wrong on the result day (May 4).” This uncertainty adds an intriguing layer to the electoral narrative.

The stakes are high for both parties. For Pinarayi Vijayan, losing would not only end his leadership but also signify a broader rejection of LDF policies by voters. Meanwhile, for the UDF, victory would restore its position after years in opposition.

Kerala CM and Ministers Skip PM Modi Event Amid Political Controversy

“I had not received any official communication inviting him to the function and termed the move ‘political’ and ‘not befitting a democracy’,” stated P A Mohammed Riyas, the Public Works Department Minister of Kerala, as he addressed the media following the notable absence of Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and several ministers at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official event in Kochi.

The event, which took place on March 11, 2026, was marked by the inauguration of various development projects, including the six-lane expansion of National Highway 66. However, it was overshadowed by a political row regarding Riyas’s exclusion from the guest list.

Riyas expressed his discontent, claiming he had not been officially invited, which he interpreted as a politically motivated decision. His sentiments were echoed by General Education Minister V Sivankutty, who described the exclusion as “shocking” and “politically motivated”.

State Ministers M B Rajesh and K Krishnankutty also opted not to attend the event, with Rajesh stating, “I am not attending the PM’s programme. Yesterday, I came to know that my name was included in the list. I already have scheduled programmes in my constituency.” This further fueled speculation about the political implications of their absence.

The controversy arises in the context of a broader political landscape in Kerala, where the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government has been in power since 2016, reviving the National Highway development project after years of stagnation.

BJP leaders responded to the situation by asserting that the Chief Minister was invited in accordance with protocol, emphasizing that Riyas’s exclusion was unnecessary. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, a BJP leader, remarked, “As head of the state, the CM was invited in accordance with the protocol.”

Additionally, BJP leader B Gopalakrishnan alleged that the state government was attempting to consolidate Muslim votes by boycotting the Prime Minister’s event, further complicating the political narrative.

The projects inaugurated during the event included the Thalappady-Chengala stretch of NH 66 and the Vengalam-Ramanattukara stretch of the Kozhikode bypass, highlighting the ongoing infrastructure development in the state.

Kerala has been recognized as the first state in India where the state government directly invested in national highway development, a move that underscores the significance of these projects for local governance and development.

As the political fallout continues, further developments are anticipated regarding the implications of this event on Kerala’s political landscape. Details remain unconfirmed.

Kerala CM and Ministers Skip PM Modi Event Amid Political Tensions

“I had not received any official communication inviting him to the function and termed the move ‘political’ and ‘not befitting a democracy’,” stated P A Mohammed Riyas, the Public Works Department Minister, regarding his absence from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s event in Kochi on March 11, 2026.

Riyas, along with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and other state ministers, notably M B Rajesh and K Krishnankutty, chose to skip the event which was marked by the inauguration of significant development projects, including the six-lane expansion of National Highway 66.

The backdrop of this political decision stems from a growing controversy over Riyas’s exclusion from the event, which he claimed was not communicated to him officially. This incident has sparked accusations of political maneuvering within the state’s political landscape.

General Education Minister V Sivankutty expressed his dismay, calling the exclusion of Riyas “shocking” and “politically motivated”. This sentiment reflects a broader concern among some state officials about the implications of such exclusions in a democratic framework.

BJP leaders, on the other hand, defended the protocol followed for the event, asserting that the Chief Minister was invited appropriately. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, a BJP leader, emphasized, “As head of the state, the CM was invited in accordance with the protocol.”

However, BJP leader B Gopalakrishnan alleged that the state government was attempting to consolidate Muslim votes by boycotting the Prime Minister’s event, further intensifying the political discourse surrounding the incident.

The National Highway development project, which includes the Thalappady-Chengala stretch and the Vengalam-Ramanattukara stretch of the Kozhikode bypass, was revitalized after the Left Democratic Front government came to power in 2016, highlighting the significance of these projects to the state’s infrastructure.

As the political situation evolves, the ramifications of this boycott may influence future interactions between the state government and the central administration. The absence of key figures from such a high-profile event raises questions about the ongoing relationship between Kerala’s leadership and the BJP-led central government.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further developments or responses from the state government following this incident. The political landscape in Kerala continues to be shaped by these tensions, reflecting the complexities of governance and representation in the region.

Background and Expectations

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares for a significant PM event in Kochi on March 11, 2026, expectations were high for the inauguration of several national highway projects in Kerala. This event is part of the Prime Minister’s campaign for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, making it a politically charged occasion.

Change in Dynamics

However, a notable shift occurred when Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and several state ministers announced their decision to boycott the event. This decision stemmed from the exclusion of Public Works Department Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas from the invitation list, which was perceived as a breach of protocol. The absence of key figures such as Local Self Government Minister M.B. Rajesh further underscores the growing tensions.

Immediate Effects

The boycott means that the event will proceed without the participation of the Kerala cabinet members, potentially diminishing its local significance. Riyas expressed his discontent, stating, “The PWD minister has been excluded, while the BJP state president has been invited,” highlighting the perceived political bias in the invitation process. Rajesh’s previous experiences with security issues at PMO events also influenced his decision to skip this occasion.

Expert Perspectives

Political analysts view this boycott as a significant development in Kerala’s political landscape. The Kerala government has invested ₹5600 crore in ongoing national highway expansion projects, and the absence of state ministers at the event may reflect broader discontent with the central government’s approach. Benny Behannan, a Congress leader, noted, “I did not want to endorse the political campaign of the BJP,” indicating a strategic withdrawal from the event.

As the PM is scheduled to spend around four hours in Kerala, the focus will likely remain on the projects being inaugurated and the accompanying NDA rally. The political ramifications of this boycott could resonate as candidates are finalized for the upcoming elections, making the event a focal point of contention.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further developments or responses from the Prime Minister’s office in light of the boycott. The situation continues to evolve as the political climate in Kerala becomes increasingly charged ahead of the elections.

Allegations Against Ganesh Kumar Spark Controversy

“The police failed to record the accuser’s statement or ensure her safety,” stated V.D. Satheeshan, highlighting the serious nature of the allegations against Ganesh Kumar, a prominent political figure in Kerala. The accusations surfaced publicly on March 9, 2026, when Kumar’s wife, Bindhu Menon, claimed she caught him ‘red-handed’ with another woman on March 7.

Menon has accused Kumar of infidelity and domestic harassment, which has led to significant political fallout. In response to the allegations, Kumar has denied any wrongdoing, asserting that the claims are part of a political witch-hunt aimed at tarnishing his reputation.

In a statement, Kumar remarked, “My personal life is mine. The people of Pathanapuram know me well like the back of their hand,” emphasizing his long-standing political career as an MLA for five consecutive terms.

The incident has drawn attention from various political figures, with Jeby Mather, an MP, calling for Kumar’s ousting from the Cabinet. Additionally, the Kerala Students Union has petitioned the State Police Chief to pursue charges of domestic violence against him.

Bindhu Menon also alleged that Kumar’s staff attempted to take her mobile phone during the incident, raising concerns about her safety and the handling of the situation by law enforcement. V.D. Satheeshan’s comments reflect a growing frustration with the police’s inaction regarding the allegations.

Kumar has further criticized R Sreelekha for her involvement in his personal affairs, questioning, “Who is Sreelekha, after all, to interfere in my personal life?” His remarks suggest a defensive stance against what he perceives as unwarranted scrutiny.

As the political landscape in Kerala continues to evolve, the implications of these allegations could resonate beyond Kumar’s personal life, impacting the upcoming Assembly elections. Kumar has pointed out that such slander campaigns often coincide with election cycles, hinting at a potential motive behind the accusations.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific actions taken by law enforcement in response to Menon’s allegations. The situation remains dynamic, and further developments are anticipated as political leaders and the public respond to the unfolding events.

What does the inauguration of the Perumbalam Bridge mean for local residents?

The recent inauguration of the Perumbalam Bridge marks a significant milestone for the residents of Perumbalam Island, who have long faced travel hardships. This bridge, the longest constructed across Vembanad Lake in Kerala, is expected to transform local connectivity and boost tourism.

The bridge, measuring 1,157 meters in length and 11 meters in width, was built at a cost of Rs 106 crore using funds from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board. It features three rainbow-colored bowstring arches in the middle, adding a unique aesthetic to its functional design.

Inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the bridge connects Perumbalam Island with the Arookutty panchayat, effectively ending the reliance on water transport that residents have depended on for years. This project was included in the state budget for 2016–17, reflecting its long-awaited importance for the community.

According to Vijayan, “If the LDF government is not in power, who would have taken care of the people of Perumbalam?” This statement underscores the political significance of the bridge, which has been described as a dream come true for local residents. Dalima Jojo MLA echoed this sentiment, stating, “The bridge was only a dream for the local people once and the Vijayan government had made it a reality for them now.”

The bridge consists of 27 spans, each 35 meters long, and includes 1.5-meter-wide pedestrian walkways on both sides, ensuring safety and accessibility for all users. With a population of approximately 12,000 residents benefiting from this infrastructure, the bridge is anticipated to significantly enhance the quality of life in the area.

Moreover, the bridge is expected to boost local tourism potential, opening new avenues for economic development in the region. As stated by Vijayan, “The ultimate objective of my government is to create a ‘Nava Kerala’ (new Kerala) where the development of the state and the welfare of its people are equally taken care of.”

As the community adjusts to this new mode of transportation, the full impact of the Perumbalam Bridge on local life and economy will unfold over time. The bridge not only represents a physical connection but also a step towards greater integration and development for the residents of Perumbalam Island.
