Chopra’s Strategic Approach to Javelin

Neeraj Chopra, a two-time Olympic medallist and reigning world champion in javelin, has articulated a strategic approach to his sport, prioritising major titles and consistent performance over solely chasing the 90-metre throw mark. He considers winning gold in significant competitions as his primary objective, with distance being a secondary goal. Chopra’s personal best throw stands at 90.23m, achieved at the Doha Diamond League last year.

Chopra acknowledges that external elements such as weather conditions can significantly impact javelin competitions. This understanding reinforces his focus on consistency, especially when challenging conditions make achieving long distances difficult. He has been preparing for potentially tough weather, including rain and gusty winds, anticipated at the upcoming Commonwealth Games, highlighting the importance of mental resilience.

Returning to the Commonwealth Games for the first time since his gold medal win in 2018, Chopra views the event as particularly significant. The 2018 Gold Coast edition marked the beginning of his senior international career, making his return after eight years a special occasion for him. He missed the 2022 Birmingham edition due to injury.

Return from Injury and Competition

Chopra arrived in Glasgow on Saturday morning, ahead of the men’s javelin throw competition. His appearance marked his return to the Commonwealth Games after a period of rehabilitation following an injury that caused him to miss the 2022 Birmingham event. He had previously finished eighth at the World Championships in Tokyo last September while dealing with a lower back injury.

Since then, Chopra has focused on rehabilitation and recovery, with his only competition appearance being at the Doha Diamond League, where he secured fourth place with an 85.69m throw. He has also managed ankle, shoulder, wrist, and adductor issues in recent years, leading to a cautious approach to his return to competition. Chopra noted that his preparations in Switzerland have been positive, with increased intensity in his workouts and fitness regime after the Doha Diamond League.

The men’s javelin event has become increasingly competitive, with rivals such as Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, an Olympic and defending Commonwealth Games champion, and Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, who achieved a world-leading 92.62m in the Rome Diamond League earlier this month. Pathirage had also placed ahead of Chopra in Doha. Chopra will be joined by Rohit Yadav and Yash Vir Singh in the men’s javelin throw event.

Mental Fortitude and Event Schedule

Chopra emphasised the importance of mental strength, particularly when facing adverse weather conditions. He mentioned that he had already conducted training throws in challenging conditions, noting that these conditions are consistent for all competitors. His mindset is focused on delivering his best performance regardless of the circumstances.

The javelin thrower highlighted the tough competition field at the Commonwealth Games, which includes medallists from the Olympics, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and Asian Games, all of whom regularly compete in the Diamond League. He views this strong competition, particularly within South Asia, as a positive factor that pushes athletes to perform better.

Chopra’s fitness is currently good, and he expressed satisfaction with his recovery and the work put into addressing his weaknesses. He noted that the nature of the competition has evolved significantly over the past eight years since his debut at the Commonwealth Games. The qualification round for the men’s javelin throw is scheduled for July 30.
